Chapter 36 Where Would She Go?
Anton frowned, clearly taken aback by how sharply Jensen spoke to Jolie.

“And if you accept Zora as your cousin, why won’t you do the same for Jolie? Has Zora been badmouthing her to you? Jensen, don’t just-”
Jensen cut him off with a frigid look before he could finish.
Anton recalled the moment they walked in-Zora had been smiling warmly up at Jensen, the two of them talking quietly. Jensen had even reached out and ruffled her hair gently
Now, in front of them, Zora didn’t offer so much as a single smile, not even bothering to greet them at all.
It struck him as utterly rude.
After only two days away from home, she seemed to have lost all sense of propriety.
‘Anton, you’re free to deny that I’m your cousin if you want.
‘And Zora hasn’t said a word against anyone. Stop blaming everything on her out of nowhere.”
ensen’s tone turned icy. The Knox family was always so quick to pass judgment.
He couldn’t begin to imagine how Zora had endured living under the same roof with them, constantly Facing such unfair treatment.
His resolve to never send Zora back to the Knox Villa/only grew stronger.
‘Anton… I’m fine. Please don’t argue with Jensen over me.
‘It’s alright if Zora doesn’t like me. After all, I’ve been living in the place that should have been hers.”
olie tugged lightly at Anton’s wrist. She couldn’t afford to let the Knox and Marlow families fall out.
The Knox family held plenty of influence across Seacrest, yet the Marlows stood even higher in social standing-and they were close allies with the Pierce family as weй.
Jensen was also on close terms with the young heir of the Pierces.
Alienating the Marlows was the last thing she could risk.

Though she played the peacemaker, Jolie never denied Anton’s implication. Deep down, she was certain Zora must have poisoned Jensen against her.
He had always responded warmly to her greetings, never once treating her with such coldness.
It was all Zora’s fault.
Bitterness toward Zora took root in Jolie’s heart.
Why did Zora always have to compete with her over everything?

Finished
Zora glanced over at Jolie and caught the undisguised loathing in her eyes. She stared back blankly, unfazed.
Jolie’s dislike for her had grown far more obvious lately; she no longer bothered hiding it as she once did.
Zora had sensed Jolie’s dislike from the very first day she returned.
The two months she spent at the Knox Villa only confirmed it completely.
Still, Zora paid it little mind. She had never truly regarded the Knox Villa as her home. She had only come back because her mentor had asked her to.
If it weren’t for him, she would have happily stayed in Maplewood.
But her mentor wanted her here, so here she was.
He hadn’t said she couldn’t leave, though, and Zora had no intention of staying with the Knoxes forever.
She knew her mentor would come fetch her once he returned.
That was why she ignored Jolie’s petty malice. As long as Jolie did her no real harm-only flaunting her parents’ affection and turning them against Zora-she paid it no heed.
If the Knox family truly cared about Zora, they would not blindly listen to rumors. They would see the ruth with their own eyes instead of choosing only what they wanted to believe.
They chose to side with Jolie for two simple reasons. Jolie was the daughter they had raised, and they efused to think poorly of her.
Meanwhile, Zora, though their biological child, had not been raised by them. Thin blood ties could never outweigh the bond they shared with Jolie.
Whenever trouble arose, their first instinct was always to protect Jolie and fear for her feelings.
It had been the same when Zora first came home. They had told her to stay hidden in her room while they prepared Jolie for the truth.
Zora might have seemed slow-witted once, but once she saw through a situation, she understood it all too clearly.
She never bothered arguing with Jolie’s provocations. She treated the Knox family exactly as they treated her.
Since they showed her no warmth, she would never pour her heart into a relationship destined to leave her hurt.
As long as she protected herself, she wouldn’t get hurt.
Her judgment had already proven right-when forced to choose, the Knoxes would always pick Jolie first.
Jolie, if you really felt like you had taken Zora’s place,” Jensen said coldly, shooting her a sharp glance, “you would have left on your own instead of putting Aunt Wendy and the rest of the family in an awkward.

spot. Empty words mean nothing.
‘Anyone can play the victim, but let me warn you-if you dare bully Zora again, I won’t hold back.”
Finished
Jolie felt a chill run down her spine, as if Jensen could see straight through every scheme she had ever plotted.
‘Jensen, what are you saying? Jolie is our sister. Where would she even go if she left?” Anton stepped in to defend her.
‘You were quick to send Zora away. Did any of you stop to wonder where she would go?”
‘We would have provided her with an apartment, of course,” Anton replied at once.
