Chapter 37 A One-Sided Sense of Family

Finished

Trouble always seemed to stir up between Jolie and Zora when they were under the same roof. Sending Zora to live elsewhere didn’t mean the Knox family was abandoning hex-they only wanted her to go stay alone and clear her head.

“You can arrange an apartment for Zora, so why can’t you do the same for Jolie? Would you really turn your backs on her if she moved out?”

Jensen found the logic laughable.

“Of course we wouldn’t,” Anton answered without thinking. There was no way the Knoxes would ever leave Jolie on her own.

His eyes drifted to Zora standing off to the side. She twisted her iced chocolate cup absently, her gaze blank and unfocused, paying no attention to their quarrel.

Feeling Anton’s stare, Zora glanced up at him faintly. Her look was so detached it left Anton with an inexplicable flutter of unease.

He had the strange, uneasy feeling that something was quietly slipping away from him, impossible to grasp or stop.

As a lawyer who interacted with all sorts of people, Anton could tell what lay behind Zora’s gaze: sheer disillusionment. She was too let down to even spare them a glance.

She cared nothing for how they treated her, watching everything unfold like an outsider. She didn’t mind what role she played in their family, nor what anyone thought of her.

It was as if she had seen straight through their true nature long ago, held no more expectations, and resigned herself to whatever they chose to give her.

Good or bad, she simply didn’t care anymore.

It didn’t matter to her if they sent her away, if they doted on Jolie while cold-shouldering her, or if they wronged her and let her suffer in silence. She brushed it all off.

It was as though her soft heart had been cruelly broken beyond repair. Having endured the hurt, she’d shut herself off completely, wrapping her heart in thorns so no one could ever wound her again.

Her indifferent attitude only riled Anton up for no clear reason.

He couldn’t understand why she could stay so calm and unbothered, while he was left with a throbbing headache and frayed nerves.

Anton never paid much attention to Zora anyway. His work kept him swamped, and he often stayed out overnight, only coming back to the Knox Villa when family matters came up.

Even at home, he and Zora rarely crossed paths; she always stayed cooped up in her room, quiet and withdrawn like a turtle hiding inside its shell.

Most of his impressions of Zora came from what Jolie had told him.

Chapter 37A-One Sided Sense of Family

Finished

She was always getting into trouble at home-accidentally breaking their mother’s favorite jewelry, knocking over and shattering their father’s prized vase, or sneaking into Yale’s room with no one knowing what she was up to.

Worst of all, she’d once brought him a bowl of nutritious soup that upset his stomach badly, leaving him miserable in the bathroom all night.

Jolie always complained that Zora disliked her, badmouthing her in front of Wendy and claiming Jolie should leave since she’d taken Zora’s place.

Every story he heard about Zora gave him a splitting headache. He couldn’t fathom how one person could stir up so much trouble all the time.

In his eyes, she was petty, badly raised, and unable to tolerate anyone else. That was why he’d never managed to warm up to her.

But after running into Zora twice lately, Anton felt like he barely recognized her anymore.

Last, time, she’d been sharp-tongued, stubborn, quick to lose her temper, and run off from home the second she was wronged.

This time, she smiled easily and didn’t bother hiding her cold attitude toward others. Even though he was her biological brother, she hadn’t spoken a single word to him, acting as if he didn’t exist.

Jolie had always said Zora was just quiet and reserved, but now Anton saw it wasn’t shyness at all-she simply had no basic manners.

‘Hmph, Anton. If you don’t want Zora, our family will take her in. Since you only see Jolie as your sister, don’t go looking for Zora ever again.”

Jensen let out a cold, sarcastic chuckle. It was clear the Knoxes truly saw nothing wrong with sending Zora

away.

He continued, “You can’t even treat two daughters properly. The Marlow family can take care of Zora instead. After all, she’s my cousin.

“You keep Jolie, and we’ll keep Zora.”

r

“Jensen…” Anton frowned in displeasure. The Knox family had more than enough means to raise two daughters, and they’d never rejected Zora.

He hated hearing the Marlows stepping in to take care of someone from his own family.

The icy mockery in Jensen’s eyes stung sharply, like a silent slap across the face, accusing him of being blind and unable to tell right from wrong.

Jensen spoke without holding back, giving neither Jolie nor Anton any face.

Anton wanted to argue back, but Jensen didn’t give him the slightest chance to reply.

Irritation welled up heavier inside Anton. He hadn’t slept well in ages, stuck with a complicated case that left him exhausted for days on end. He’d also run out of his calming herbal tonic, leaving his nerves

stretched taut to the breaking point.

Running into Zora and getting rebuked by Jensen only made his foul mood worse.

He silently regretted ever coming out.

Chapter 88 The Precious Gem Gift

Fir-heg

No one among the Knox brothers dared to go against Jensen-he held considerable sway in their circle, and none wished to clash with him.-

Anton struggled to quiet the tangled thoughts swirling in his mind, doing his utmost to suppress the flustered unease churning in his chest.

Anton and Jolie fell into an awkward silence, neither knowing what to say.

Jolie could feel every mocking gaze from the crowd boring into her, as if everyone around looked down on her with undisguised contempt.

“Excuse me, I’m here to pick up my custom order.”

With the two remaining quiet, Jensen took Zora by the arm and walked toward the counter.

“Of course, Mr. Marlow. Your custom piece is all ready right this way-would you like to take a look?”

The clerk had been quietly soaking up all the drama, burning to finish her shift and gush about it with her friends.

She quickly composed herself, putting on a polite smile and leading them over to the jewelry display where Jolie had been standing earlier.

“Take a look, Zora. This is my little welcome gift. I didn’t get the chance to give it to you sooner, so I’m making up for it today.”

Jensen and Zora stepped closer.

He’d ordered this custom jewelry rushed the very first day he met Zora, and today was exactly the day it was ready for pickup, so he had brought her here to collect it.

Staring at the exquisite gemstone set inside the glass display case, Zora’s round eyes lit up with undisguised amazement.

Her fingers, which had been tightly clutching her iced chocolate dup, slowly relaxed.

ľ

“Thank you.” She lifted her gaze to meet Jensen’s, a soft little smile curving her lips.

At the sound of her voice, Anton glanced over instinctively, only to see that she was speaking to Jensen.

His lips pressed into a tight, rigid line.

Jolie’s nails dug sharply into her palm. She’d never imagined the fine jewelry was custom-made for Zora by Jensen.

How dare that lowly girl own something so beautiful?

A piece like this ought to be hers alone!

“Jensen… this design is lovely. My mom would surely adore it. Would you be willing to part with it?” Jolie
