Chapter 361 He’s Insecure

That was exactly how Leighton felt around Zora.

Christmas was coming fast, and Asher would be back any day now. Once he returned, Zora might leave him. The thought ate at Leighton more and more every day.

He couldn’t even tell what he was most scared of. He was afraid Zora would forget all about him once Asher was around. He was even more scared she’d leave with Asher for good and never come back.

That’s why Leighton kept looking for chances to check where he stood in her heart. He wanted to sneak his way deeper into her life, little by little.

He didn’t need to be her number one. He just wanted a tiny, steady spot in her heart. A spot that would make her care about him, even just a little bit.

Zora never got the way adults thought. She had no clue why Leighton was stressing over the future all of a sudden.

Preparing for future problems?

What problems? Is he worried my mentoris hotter than him? Is he gonna get plastic surgery just to compete?

Zora hated overthinking stuff that hadn’t even happened yet.

“Are you scared he’s better looking than you?”

Zora stared at him with big, honest eyes, trying to read what he was thinking.

Leighton said nothing. His silence spoke for itself.

Zora only meant to tease him, but she never expected him to take it this seriously.

She was totally stunned.

He was always so confident and classy. Who knew he’d care this much about who was prettier?

“Be straight with me. No favoritism. Who’s better looking, me or your mentor?”

Seeing her go quiet, Leighton dropped his calm act. He was like a stubborn kid begging for his favorite candy, dead set on getting a real answer.

He had to know the truth once and for all.

“Do you want the real truth, or a nice lie?” Zora blinked, looking innocent.

“The truth.”

Leighton didn’t hesitate. He needed the real answer.

“The truth…” Zora dragged her words out, pretending to think hard.

Leighton’s eyes stayed locked on her face. He watched every tiny expression, terrified she’d lie

to him.

“Stop staring at me like that.”

Zora grew flustered. His gaze was so soft and intense that it threw her off.

She couldn’t focus or think straight at all.

“No way. I’m afraid you’ll lie.”

Leighton refused to look away.

Zora was so annoyed. All her little nervous feelings vanished because of how stubborn he was.

Why wouldI lie to him?

Does he trust me so little?

Why stare at me like I’m some liar?

Zora frowned and stared right back. “I’m not gonna lie. What’s the point?”

“You admire your mentor so much. I’m scared your favoritism will make you give me a fake answer,” Leighton answered honestly.

Zora didn’t even know what to say to that.

He kind of had a point.

In her eyes, her mentor was the most handsome guy in the whole world.

Not even Leighton could compare to him.

Everyone had favorites. No one was ever completely fair. And Zora was super biased when it came to her mentor.

She was totally loyal to him.

She hadn’t seen him in over six months, but he was still the best and prettiest person in her heart.

Thinking this, Zora felt guilty and avoided Leighton’s eyes.

She wouldn’t have thought about it if he hadn’t brought it up, but now she couldn’t help it.

“Let’s drop that topic. Let’s get back to our question.”

Leighton knew their conversation had gone off track.

All he cared about right now was how much less attractive he was than Asher.

If the gap was huge, there was nothing he could do. He’d just have to win her over in other

ways.

With someone as perfect as Asher around, she might never think he was good-looking enough.

But if the gap was small, he could keep trying to improve. A guy always needed goals.

Leighton’s first goal was to win Zora over with his looks.

His second goal was to blend himself completely into her life. He wanted her to carry him in her thoughts everywhere she went, and never forget about him.

He had big plans, and he was gonna keep working hard.

“Okay…” Zora was relieved he changed the subject and nodded.

She was scared he’d see through her real thoughts and start pouting at her.

Zora knew Leighton was super smart.

If he hadn’t switched topics, he definitely would’ve figured out what she was thinking.

Leighton was brilliant, but he could also be really petty sometimes.

If he knew she was thinking about someone else while talking to him, he’d mope and complain

nonstop.

He’d sigh and whine, “I guess I’m just not important to you. I’m right here in front of you, but you don’t even notice me and still have room in your head for someone else.”
