Salvador bought the house with three months’ advance pay from Leighton.

He was in charge of the Pierce Group’s security systems.

Zora didn’t stay long. She hung around for a bit, then got ready to head home.

Maya walked downstairs with her.

“See you at school tomorrow,” Zora said once they reached the community gate.

“These are the study notes I organized for you. Hit me up if you don’t get anything.” Maya handed her a notebook.

“Thanks.” Zora took it with both hands and held it to her chest.

Noreen and Aaron were waiting for her right outside the neighborhood.

“I can walk over alone. My car’s just up ahead.” Zora nodded toward the vehicle parked a few yards across the road.

She started walking to cross the street.

Halfway across, Zora suddenly got the feeling someone was watching her.

She frowned and looked toward where the feeling came from.

Nothing seemed off. People walked back and forth, and everything looked normal.

“Ms. Hale, what’s wrong?”

Noreen saw Zora come out of the community and hurried over to her.

“It’s fine, Noreen.” Zora shook her head and glanced back one more time.

Still nothing.

She figured she was just overworked and tired, so she brushed it off.

Noreen scanned the whole area, checked every passerby, found no danger, and then walked with Zora to the car.

Right after Zora got in the car, her phone rang.

It was an unknown number labeled as the local police station.

“Hello?” Zora answered.

Hi, this is the police department. Wendy is asking to meet you.”

Zora stayed quiet for a few seconds.

“I don’t want to see her.”

She never thought she’d get a call like this after more than a month, out of nowhere.

The thought of Wendy nearly getting Floyd killed made her turn cold.

She had no interest in meeting her. Wendy had been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

“Got it. We’ll inform Wendy of your decision.”

The call ended.

Zora had classes all day and kept Kimberly company afterward. She was exhausted. She curled up in the car and fell asleep right away.

The car pulled into the underground parking lot, and Leighton was already waiting there.

“Mr. Pierce, Ms. Hale’s asleep.”

Noreen got out first. She was about to wake Zora up when she spotted Leighton and spoke respectfully.

“She got a police call on the ride here. Wendy wanted to meet her, but she refused.”

Leighton’s brows tightened slightly at the name Wendy.

A cold breeze blew into the car. Zora stirred in her sleep, curling up a little tighter, and her blanket slipped down.

“You guys can head back. I’ve got her.”

Leighton noticed her state and opened the car door.

Zora leaned against the seat, her pretty face soft with tiredness.

He leaned in, slipped one arm behind her back and the other under her knees, and lifted her up gently.

The small movement jostled her. Zora shifted, but the second she smelled his familiar scent, her tensed brows relaxed.

She snuggled into a better spot on his shoulder and fell right back asleep.

Leighton carried her all the way home. He was about to take her up to her room when the sensor door made a soft sound.

Zora’s sleepy eyes fluttered open.

The first thing she saw was his sharp jawline and his pretty, rose-colored lips.

Without thinking, she lifted her thin fingers and touched his lips.

They felt warm, soft and bouncy, way nicer than jelly.

The second her fingers touched him, Leighton stopped walking and looked down at her.

“You awake?” His deep, nice voice drifted to her ears.

Zora’s fingers were still resting on his lips. Her brain slowly caught up.

She blinked, totally dazed, her doll-like face full of confusion.

She tilted her head up and stared at his stunning face. His deep, loving eyes reflected her flustered look.

Zora jumped in shock and tried to sit up, but his arm around her waist held her firmly in place.

“Don’t move. You’ll fall, then you’ll get mad at me.” Leighton held her tighter.

“Lei… Leighton…”

Zora still thought she was in the car. She had no clue she was being carried in his arms.

She stammered nervously, her face turning bright red instantly.

“What’s wrong?” Leighton looked down at her, noticing her panic.

“Put me down.” Zora could feel his strong hand around her waist and saw his arm holding her legs up.
