No one was ever forced to work overtime here. The company even provided free dinner, plus monthly extra bonuses. Every employee earned well over ten thousand dollars on average. Under such great benefits, everyone was glad to stay late and earn

more.

“But sir, we haven’t finished going over the project details…”

“We’ll sort it out tomorrow. Meeting dismissed.”

Jensen stood up and headed straight outside. Kent quickly gathered all the documents on the table and hurried after him.

“Sir, is something bothering you?”

“Where is Nina?”

“Ms. Tann? She should have left work by this hour.”

“You didn’t arrange a car to send her home?”

Kent froze, lost for words.

Jensen frowned sharply. “If anything happens to her, you will take full responsibility.”

“I was careless, sir! I’ll send people to catch up with her right away and make sure she stays safe!”

Kent rushed out in a panic.

Jensen pulled out his phone and dialed Nina’s number. The line rang on and on with no answer, making his heart race with unease. Just as the call was about to end, she finally picked up.

“Hello?” Her voice sounded cautious.

“It’s me.”

Nina checked the unfamiliar caller ID in confusion. “Did you change your number?”

“Where are you now?”

“I just left the office building”

“Did you book a ride?”

“Not yet.”

“Wait right there at the gate.”

He hung up before she could reply.

Nina frowned to herself. He’s always so used to making decisions for others without asking.

Cold night wind swept across the street. Soon a taxi pulled up beside her, and the driver leaned his head out

“Need a ride, miss?”

“No thanks, I’m waiting for someone”

“It’s freezing out here. You’d better get in the car”

The man stepped out of the vehicle. Nina caught sight of his hunched figure at once, recognizing him instantly as Katrina’s father, David. She remembered his face well. Six years back, he was called to school because Katrina misbehaved.

She stepped backward at once, certain his appearance here was no mere coincidence.

“Miss…”

“Don’t come any closer! I’ll scream for help!”

Her sharp tone startled David, yet the thought of his daughter’s broken family fueled his rage. He lunged forward quickly, covered her mouth and nose, and forced her into the car.

Nina instantly smelled ether on the cloth he held over her face. She held her breath tight, but still inhaled a small amount of the drug, She struggled hard, and her phone slipped out of her hand and fell onto the pavement.

This was David’s first time doing something so reckless. Overwhelmed by nervousness, he failed to notice the dropped phone. He jumped back into the car and sped straight toward the remote countryside.

Meanwhile, Jensen walked out of the company gate only to find the street completely empty. Kent rushed over shortly after.

“Sir, the car is ready from the underground parking lot.”

“Where is Nina?”

Kent went blank with shock. He had seen her standing there just moments ago, yet she was nowhere to be seen now.

Jensen redialed her number right away. The familiar ringtone echoed nearby. He looked down and spotted her phone lying on the ground. He bent down to pick it up, his face darkening instantly with dread.

Back in the desolate wilderness, David kept muttering nervously as he dug a deep pit with a shovel.

“I’m so sorry. Don’t blame me. I’m only doing this for my daughter. You ruined other people’s happy home, and this is the price you deserve. Don’t ever do such things again in your next life.”

Nina slowly regained consciousness and heard his endless rambling. She realized she had already been carried out of the car David was busily digging soil in this barren land.

Her heart sank in horror. She never thought Katrina would actually talk her own father into burying her alive. She held back her rising fear and kept perfectly quiet, daring not make a single sound.
