Cassia studied Victoria’s perfect little act, her lips curving into a faint smile.

But her smile was icy. It didn’t reach her eyes. It gleamed like sunlight on frozen glass.
Victoria’s stomach turned. That look stripped her bare. It made her feel as if every ugly thought she’d ever hidden was now visible in Cassia’s gaze.
Her chest tightened. For the first time that evening, she wanted to look away.
“I’m hungry. I need something to eat.”
Cassia wasn’t the type to stir drama for sport. She just hadn’t forgotten how Brie once humiliated her by handing over her old clothes like charity.
If she kept letting them step on her, they’d only press harder.
Cassia could hold her temper, but she was far from weak.
She hadn’t come downstairs dressed like that to disgrace Victoria or Vance. They were still her grandmother and father.
But the truth was simpler. She’d been gaming all afternoon, her stomach was growling, and she’d eaten everything in her room.
Victoria didn’t buy her excuse for a second.
To her, Cassia’s entrance was calculated. She believed Cassia had come down at the height of the party to humiliate her and pay her back for favoring Brie.
“Go back upstairs. You can come down when everyone leaves.” Victoria’s tone was sharp and commanding.
She thought Cassia would at least pretend to obey her in front of so many guests. I am still her elder. She at least will do it for appearances.
She was wrong.
Cassia hadn’t eaten all day.
For her mother’s sake, the only one in this house who still cared about her, she’d stayed silent.
But hunger had its limits.

Sure, she wanted to rattle Brie a little. But mostly, she was starving.
“I said I’m hungry.”

Cassia put weight on every word, her voice even but cold. She walked straight past Victoria, brushed her shoulder, and made her way toward the long buffet table.
The table sparkled under the chandelier, lined with trays of food, desserts, and fruit. Cassia picked up a fresh plate and, with every eye on her, began scooping pasta onto it.
The silence was thick enough to cut.
She took her fork, twisted the pasta neatly, and started eating as if no one else existed.
The crowd stood frozen.
Danica rolled her eyes. “Everyone’s staring at her, and she still eats like nothing’s wrong?”
“Maybe she’s just starving.”
Brie’s hand tightened around her dress, her knuckles pale against the fabric.
“Brie, you’re too sweet,” Danica said, looping her arm through her sister’s. “It’s fine to be kind, but people will walk all over you. If I didn’t protect you at school, and if Grandma and Dad didn’t back you up here, Cassia would’ve crushed you by now.”
Brie smiled, soft and poised. “Danica, you’re exaggerating again.”
Her tone sounded gentle, but the words carried a hidden edge.
On the surface, it was kindness. Beneath it, she had just confirmed everything Danica implied -that Cassia had bullied her, and more than once.
Just then, a petite girl slipped through the circle of onlookers.
Rosalie, a model student of the advanced program and Danica’s classmate, had been one of the guests invited tonight.
“That was strange, Brie,” Rosalie said plainly. “You made it sound like Cassia actually bullied you.”
“Um…”
Brie froze, caught off guard. She hadn’t expected anyone to speak up for Cassia—especially not Rosalie.

Her cheeks flushed pink. She glanced around, relieved no one else was looking her way, and forced a delicate smile. “That’s not what I meant. Cassia’s never bullied me. She’s actually very kind.”
Rosalie nodded thoughtfully. “Yeah. Cassia’s actually a really good person.”
“What? Rosalie, you-” Danica started to retort, but Brie quickly tightened her grip on her arm.
“Danica, it’s my birthday,” Brie said softly, her tone calm but firm. “Do me a favor and stop talking.” She needed to regain her composure before anyone read too much into her earlier
comment.
Brie cared about Rosalie’s opinion. Not because she was her class‘ model student, but because of what she had once seen after school.
One afternoon, Brie had watched Rosalie step into a long black limousine–a Lincoln. The kind of car that always waited outside luxury hotels and private events.
If her guess was right, that quiet, ordinary–looking girl was the daughter of the CEO of the Scott Group.
Lilian had probably chosen Rosalie to be class president for that reason.
After all, every student at Zrario High came from wealth or power.
Brie had told no one. At school, she’d even tried to be friendly with Rosalie, but Rosalie treated her as just another classmate. Nothing more.
As she was thinking about that, Rosalie walked right past her and went toward Cassia.
Wait. Was she going to talk to her?
