After dinner, they still had half an hour before after hours. Bric pulled Cassia into her room and stopped in front of the piano. She handed over three sheets of music.
“Cassia, can you even read this?” she asked, her tone dripping with mockery.
Brie thought Cassia was lazy and clueless. She had picked an especially hard piece, hoping to watch her fail.
Cassia glanced at the music sheets, then looked away.
She had written so many pieces before, she’d lost count.
“Pick something easier,” Victoria said as she stepped into the room.
Danica wandered over, eager to watch the show.
“Yeah, Brie, make it something simple. We don’t need her tripping over the keys and whining that we bullied her.”
Lately, seeing Cassia humiliated was her favorite form of entertainment.
Geneva stayed in the kitchen, doing the dishes. She wasn’t here.
“I think this one’s easy enough,” Brie said with a look of false innocence.
“She’s not you. What’s easy for you might as well be impossible for her,” Victoria replied. She flipped through a few sheets, picked the easiest piece, and placed it on the piano. Then she glanced at Cassia, who was half–distracted by her phone. “Put that thing down and play this.”
Victoria’s eyes were sharp, full of the same irritation she always showed when she looked at Cassia.
Brie and Danica exchanged knowing glances, covering their smiles with their hands.
Cassia let out a quiet sigh, set her phone aside, and moved to the piano.
She sat down, straight–backed and poised, placing her hands gently on the keys.
Even without trying, she looked beautiful. Just sitting there was enough to hold their attention.
The soft evening breeze drifted in through the open window, making the curtains ripple like waves.
Her fingers touched the keys, and the sound that followed was smooth and clear, like water flowing over
stone.
The notes filled the room, light and effortless, until everything else seemed to fade away.
Danica, Brie, and Victoria froze, their expressions caught between disbelief and awe.
Was this really Cassia?

It couldn’t be.
The song wasn’t even the one written on the page.
Was she making it up as she went?
Just as the question settled in, the music stopped. The last note lingered for a heartbeat before dissolving
into silence.
Why did she stop?
Had it been luck? A random melody that happened to sound beautiful?
Outside, the winter wind grew stronger, making the curtains billow harder around her. The pale fabric swirled near Cassia’s frame, turning her into a fleeting shadow against the darkening sky.
She lowered her hands, slid them into her pockets, and stood up.
“I’m heading to after hours,” she said quietly.
Without so much as a glance at them, she started for the door.
“Wait!” Brie blurted, her voice shaky with disbelief. “That kind of playing–it’s at least Level Five. You- what?”
Cassia paused, turned her head slightly, and said in a calm, steady voice, “It’s only Level Nine.”
Then she walked out, her steps light and unhurried.
Level Nine. Not the ordinary National Piano Exam kind, but the Central Music Academy’s Level Nine- the one above the standard Level Ten.
The room stayed silent. No one moved.
After a long moment, Brie muttered, “That piece didn’t sound familiar. She must’ve made it up.”
There was no way Cassia could actually play like that. No way she was better than her.
Geneva suddenly leaned into the doorway, curiosity lighting up her face.
“Brie, was that you playing just now? It sounded amazing! Oh, where’s Cassia?”
She had been washing dishes in the kitchen when a stream of music floated out of Brie’s room–clear, smooth, and mesmerizing. The sound had completely pulled her in, and she’d forgotten all about the dishes.
But when the music suddenly stopped, she rushed over, hoping to hear more.
“Brie, please. That country girl grew up in the sticks. There’s no way she knows how to play piano. Her sugar daddy must’ve paid for lessons,” Danica said from inside the room.
