“He said Cassia is truly gifted at volleyball and wants her to join a training camp. If she does well, she could get guaranteed admission to Vego University as a top athlete. He also told Danica and Brie and asked them to let us know so we could help persuade Cassia.”
After laying everything out, Victoria shot a furious look at Danica and Brie. “But we never heard a single word about this!”
“Really?”
Vance looked completely shocked.
If it came from his mother, then it had to be true.
If Cassia could one day bring honor to the country, that would only help the Woods.
His two daughters had almost made the family miss such an amazing chance. Good thing Cassia’s P.E. teacher had called them himself.
All the anger Vance had been holding in since the school incident finally burst out. He turned it all on Danica and Brie.
“Why didn’t you say anything? Why did you lie? Is this how I raised you? The worst thing anyone can do is lie!”
The two sisters were stunned by his scolding.
Just then, Cassia also came home and saw them being reprimanded.
To Danica and Brie, it felt like getting slapped again and again, their pride completely crushed.
Victoria and Geneva briefly glanced at Cassia, then looked back at Danica and Brie, silently blaming them as well.
Victoria added a few sharp comments now and then. Even Geneva, who usually protected them, didn’t step in this time.
They had messed up, so they had to take it.
Vance kept scolding. Brie bit her lip hard, fists clenched, and glanced at Danica.
Danica stood there with her head lowered and back straight, taking it all without reacting.

She looked completely numb.
Brie pressed her lips until they turned pale.

Seizing a pause in Vance’s lecture, she lifted her head, eyes full of hurt and tears about to fall.
“Dad, Mom, Grandma, I’m sorry. We didn’t mean to lie. It’s just … You know Cassia’s temper. Once she decides something, no one can change her mind. We knew that if we told you, you’d definitely try hard to persuade her.”
Vance paused for a moment.
It works!
Brie quickly continued, “And if Cassia still refused, everyone would get upset and start arguing. We didn’t want that. We were sure she’d never agree anyway, so we thought it was better not to say anything.”
So that was the reason.
Victoria looked at Brie, who was on the verge of tears, and at Danica, who silently endured everything. Her chest tightened.
“I shouldn’t have talked to you like that.”
At that, Brie and Danica finally broke down. Big tears streamed down their faces.
They were crying again.
Vance let out a helpless sigh.
Women were soft–hearted. The moment Victoria and Geneva saw them cry, they stood up and pulled the girls into their arms, gently patting their backs.
“It’s my fault. Don’t cry…”
“Alright, we know you didn’t mean it. It’s okay.”
Victoria and Geneva spoke softly, coaxing them like children.
Vance pursed his lips, wondering if he’d gone too far. He had never scolded them that harshly before.
At that moment, Cassia finished changing her shoes and walked past the group, cool and distant.
