Still, the day the truth finally flipped face–up was undeniably something to look forward to.
Randy watched Aspen slink down the mountain then glanced at Brie and Danica beside him -his gaze turning increasingly unfriendly.
Winter got dark early. By the time Aspen, with his two sisters in tow, made it back to where Vance had parked, night had already fallen.
Vance switched on the headlights and smiled as he welcomed his “pride and joy“—his three kids.
But then, he saw their long faces–and the expensive gifts still in their hands, unsent.
“Aspen–what happened? Mr. Sawyer didn’t take you in?”
“No…”
Frustrated, Aspen threw the items into the trunk
It was humiliating to say, but he still forced it out. “Randy beat me. I didn’t even get to see Mr. Sawyer.”
Vance thought about it—and honestly, it made sense.
A man like Henry wasn’t someone you just walked up to and met.
“It’s fine, Aspen. You’re already very good. Plenty of players can’t even earn a chance to challenge Mr. Sawyer’s disciples,” Vance said, regretful, patting his son’s shoulder to comfort him.
He truly envied that legendary chess player. One game with Henry–and it made the old master want to recruit her, even to the extent of accepting her on his master’s behalf. What glory.
Too bad, she refused.
“If only that legendary player’s ‘chance‘ could land on the Woods…”
Aspen said nothing, pulled open the passenger door, and got in.
Vance sighed again, then looked toward Brie, who hadn’t spoken at all.

Vance wanted Brie to describe the game so he could recreate the position later, let Aspen study it, sharpen his chess, and come back up the mountain for a rematch when he had the chance.
But Brie frowned, putting on a worried act.
“Dad, compared to Aspen’s issue … Cassia…”
Cassia?
“Why bring her up?” The moment Vance heard Cassia’s name, his temple started throbbing.
Brie hesitated, then said, “Actually… Cassia got into the manor gathering too.”
“What?” Vance froze. “They didn’t throw her out?
Danica said indignantly, “They probably kicked her out once, but she shamelessly went back up.”
“Oh.”
Vance couldn’t understand why Cassia–someone who supposedly didn’t know chess–would attend a grandmaster’s gathering.
“What was she doing there?”
Other than humiliating herself—what else? Mooched pastries?
Brie pressed her lips together. “Dad, I don’t know what Cassia went for, but there’s something I have to tell you–for her own sake.”
“What?”
“We ran into Cassia at the mountain gate earlier The gatekeeper disciple said Aspen could only bring two people in. Cassia doesn’t know chess, so Aspen decided to bring Danica and I.”
“Mm. And then?”
Brie continued, “Later, a friend of Professor Burton from our school arrived, and he brought Cassia in with him.” Brie gave the rough outline.
“Professor Burton’s friend?” Vance blinked. “Tha Mr. Grey–the one even your principal said isn’t in the same league?”
Brie and Danica nodded in unison. “Mm–hm.”

“Who exactly is he?” Vance felt more and more that this “Mr. Grey” was no ordinary figure.
“I secretly took a photo of him,” Danica said proudly, pulling out her phone like she’d done a great deed.
He was so handsome that Danica had wanted to keep a picture to admire later–she hadn’t expected it to become useful now.
Secretly photographing someone was unethical, but Vance and Brie didn’t scold Danica much.
