“Why?” Danica was confused.

She’d been planning to ask whether Vance knew that handsome man–if he did, she wanted an introduction.
“Because he’s not in our league.”
Brie and Danica looked even more puzzled.
Why was their father speaking in the same riddle their principal had used?
Cassia rode back in Draven’s car.
Leaving Queen parked at Westhill Residence was perfect. They’d probably already seen her drive it out of Wood Manor’s yard–so letting the car sit there for a few days would quiet the Woods‘ suspicions, and keep Draven from getting suspicious too.
Back at Dunstino Bay, she went to Sterling’s place to keep him company and do a counseling session with him.
After today’s session, she received a WhatsApp message from her mother, Geneva.
Tonight was the family’s once–a–month dinner gathering.
Since it was a family dinner where no one was supposed to be missing–and Geneva had personally messaged her–she’d go back this time.
And she could bring Sterling’s dinner back with her.
Cassia had Jake drive her back to the Woods‘ place.
Wood Manor.
After getting humiliated at Henry’s manor, Aspen went home and locked himself in his room, grinding through chess study.
Vance’s hopes had crashed to rock bottom, but a least Aspen didn’t collapse–he went into “closed–door training” to level up his chess.
Cassia came back and did whatever she wanted as usual, stretched out on the couch, scrolling through her phone.

Worried Aspen would stew himself sick, Vance called him out and told him to play a game. with him.
Cassia kept scrolling. From her angle, she could clearly see the positions on Vance and Aspen’s board.
Cassia glanced at it lazily and tossed out a single airy verdict. “You’re losing.”
“No manners! Spectators don’t speak during a game!”
Vance shot Cassia an annoyed glare.
He was furious–he’d already lost several games in a row!
And Cassia was daring to jinx him?
Cassia sank back into the cushions, raised a brow and snorted. “You told Aspen not to go easy on you. And you’ve got the nerve to blame me?”
Aspen said nothing.
Vance was even more convinced this kid was sent by the heavens to torment him.
“If you can’t play, don’t talk nonsense.”
After that, Vance refocused on the board.
Was he really going to lose?
Cassia didn’t “know chess“-how could she possibly read that the position was collapsing?
He wasn’t buying a word of Cassia’s crap.
And yet, not long later, Vance’s resentful groan rang out.
“Lost again…”
Dinner was brought to the table.
“Dad, should we pack up the board?” Aspen asked.
“Later. Eat first.” Vance was in a foul mood–Cassa had called the result exactly, and he didn’t want to touch the pieces right now.
But his mind was still stuck on that last game.
The position was already dead–no escape line in sight. Still, he couldn’t help peeking for a

“Okay.” Aspen stood up. As he walked around the table, he accidentally knocked over Vance’s piece box.
Luckily, it fell straight down and didn’t flip–only a few pieces spilled out.
One white piece rolled to Cassia’s foot.
Cassia bent and picked it up.
Aspen put the box back. Cassia walked past him, intending to return the piece to the box.
When she reached the board, Cassia narrowed her eyes–and casually placed the white piece on the board.
During dinner, everyone chatted, but Vance responded absentmindedly.
His head was filled with that position–no matter how he ran the lines, he couldn’t find a single saving move.
Lost again. Three losses in a row!
Vance glanced at Aspen.
This kid was seriously honest–Vance told him not to go easy, and Aspen actually didn’t?
Before they started, Vance had planned to “hang a piece” here and there–let Aspen regain some confidence.
But as they played, he realized–hell–he didn’t need to go easy at all!
Noticing the look, Aspen thought, Next game, I should give him a little breathing room.
After dinner, Vance told Danica and Brie to come watch him play Aspen.
Vance and Aspen returned to the board and took their seats.
Still unwilling to accept it, Vance looked back at the board.
One look and he nearly jumped. How was the upper–right suddenly alive?
“This-”
Vance saw it, and Aspen saw it too.
“Someone touched the board!”

“Who moved the pieces?!”
Vance’s shout drew Victoria and Geneva’s attention immediately.
“Which one of you played a move?!” Vance demanded, unusually worked up.

He’d been calculating hard with no answer–then, after one meal, someone had changed the board.
Just one move–and White suddenly had a viable line in the upper–right.
How had he not seen that move earlier? It was brilliant–absolutely surgical!
“Aspen, what happened to the position?” Geneva asked as she walked over, curious.
Aspen stared at the board, stunned.
Just minutes ago, he’d been sure his dad was doomed. He hadn’t expected this move.
Who played it?
“This game was basically settled… but now, that single move makes White’s upper–right group come alive–and instead, Black is the one slipping into the worse end of the position.”
