There were only a handful of people here who understood the game at all. Aside from him
and his father, everyone else’s level was basically nothing worth mentioning.
“That good? Then who played it?” Danica asked.
It had to be either Brie or Danica.
Between the two sisters, Brie’s level was higher.
“Brie, was it you?” Danica asked, looking at her.
The moment she said it, everyone’s eyes snapped to Brie.
Brie was at International Master strength–by any measure, that was impressive.
But that kind of razor–clean move–Brie played i Vance and Aspen both felt it was unlikely.
Brie glanced at Danica, thinking, My idiot little sister … handing me this perfect opportunity on a silver platter.
In that case, she wouldn’t be polite about it.
“Um, Dad, Aspen … I just tried dropping a piece earlier…” Brie lowered her head, looking like she was waiting to be scolded. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to touch the board–I just got itchy fingers…”
“You really played it?” Vance stared at Brie, eyes wide.
Aspen was staring at Brie, too.
Brie nodded weakly. “Sorry, Dad. I shouldn’t have messed with the board.”
Hearing Brie admit it, Vance’s shock shifted into approval.
“I’m not blaming you. Forget that–how did you see that move? Why play it there?”
Aspen was curious too, waiting for Brie’s explanation.
But the move hadn’t been Brie’s. If she had to justify it, what could she even say?
“I just… tried it. I didn’t think that far.”
A coincidence? Vance and Aspen thought the same thing.

After all, Brie was “only” at International Master strength. At her level, it really was hard to find a move that clean and lethal.
So, it was probably luck.
Victoria burst into laughter.
“Brie, you’re amazing! Aspen’s a Solid Grandmaster! And you outplayed him!”
Danica chimed in, praising, “Brie is the genius of our family! She casually plays one move and turns a dead position into a living one!”
Hearing that, Cassia–curled up on the couch–ut her phone down.
She lifted her eyes and narrowed them at Brie.
“You played it?”
Brie turned her head and met Cassia’s unreadable stare–and felt a sudden, naked kind of
fear.
It left her wanting to vanish, to crawl into a hole and disappear.
“Not Brie?” Danica’s voice turned sharp and mocking. “Cassia, don’t tell me you’re saying you moved the board.”
“Mm,” Cassia answered flatly.
A mocking smile tugged at Cassia’s lips.
“Stop bragging! You’ve never even touched the game–how would you know how to play? If you’re going to lie, at least draft a script first!”
“Heh.”
Cassia stood and walked over slowly, stopping in front of Bric.
She could swallow a lot of things–but not this.
“Come. Play me.”
Cold–pure cold, the kind that froze you from lead to toe.
Brie flinched at Cassia’s pressure.
Strange–she supposedly couldn’t play, so how could she radiate this kind of board–side
intimidation?

Luckily, Danica started shouting, “What’s with that tone?! Who are you to order Brie to play you? You-”
“Weren’t you two always dying to ‘give me a teaching game‘?” Cassia smiled faintly, but her words had no warmth.
“Fine. Teach me–right now.”
Watching Cassia, a chill shot up everyone’s spine from the heels.
Whether Cassia could play or not, that devilish presence alone was enough to scare people back.
“I…” Brie hesitated, torn. Danica stepped between Cassia and Brie.
“You loser aren’t worthy of Brie teaching you! You want a game? I’ll play you!”
Now that was interesting.
“Danica, don’t be rude–she’s your sister…” Genera started to stop her, but Vance put a hand on her shoulder.
“Kids have their own way of handling things. Well just watch.”
Aspen felt Dad was right.
Honestly, both Aspen and Vance suspected that white move” on the board might not have been Brie’s at all.
If it was a coincidence, it was way too perfect.
This was perfect–time to verify.
And since they were bored anyway, it could count as early holiday entertainment.
Danica and Cassia took seats on opposite sides of the board.
After drawing for the first move, Danica took White and played first.
Danica had barely placed her piece–her hand still above the board–when Cassia snapped Black down in reply.
Fast. Precise. Brutal.
Danica played again. Cassia answered immediately.

Everyone was stunned–did she not need to think at all before moving?
Watching Cassia’s frantic, chaotic–looking tempo, it seemed like she was just playing randomly.
But the longer they watched, the more their jaws dropped.

Cassia’s moves looked messy–almost careless–but every single one landed exactly where it should. Each move was a kill shot, a storm of fire on the board that gave her opponent no room to breathe.
