Vance’s face darkened. Embarrassed, he quickly changed the subject and looked at Aspen.

“Mr. Sawyer, this is my son. You should remember him, right?”

Aspen did have decent talent, so Henry did remember him.

“His chess skills are fairly good.”

Aspen’s heart leaped. Did this mean Henry had changed his mind and wanted to take him in?

“Mr. Sawyer, I’m really sorry,” Aspen said quickly “I rushed out today and didn’t expect to meet you, so I didn’t bring any gifts-”

“I’ve heard from Randy,” Henry interrupted calmly. “Your chess is fine, but your character is

not.”

Aspen froze mid–sentence.

So did Vance.

“Mr. Sawyer, I can swear on my life,” Vance said anxiously. “My son is upright and honest. His character is absolutely fine!”

Henry looked straight at Aspen. “Is that so? Randy told me that at the last gathering, you came to the estate with your sisters. Without even asking, you kept one behind and left with the others. Playing favorites like that, don’t you think that’s wrong as an older brother?”

Aspen stared at Henry, his mouth slightly open, his expression blank.

Slowly, he understood. That day, the reason Henry refused to take him as a student was not because he lost to Randy in chess. It was because of this.

Because of Cassia.

If Cassia had not shown up that day, he might already be Henry’s student by now.

Vance understood it too. So that was why Henry refused Aspen. It was all because that girl Cassia had ruined everything.

“Mr. Sawyer, you don’t know the whole story,” Vance said quickly. “Cassia may be Aspen’s sister, but she’s rebellious and cold. She doesn’t get along with any of her siblings. Naturally, Aspen is closer to the other two sisters. Isn’t it normal for him to favor them?”

He continued, “Besides, at the time, Aspen didn’t know Cassia knew how to play chess. So, he chose to bring Brie and Danica, who at least play at an amateur level.”

That part was technically true. They only found out later that Cassia could play chess.

If that brat knew chess, why didn’t she say so earlier? If she had, none of this would have happened.

If Henry kept pressing this issue, Vance decided he would deal with Cassia properly when they got home.

But as Henry listened, his heart sank further and further by the second.

Vance spoke warmly when he called out to his other children. When he mentioned his eldest daughter, his tone was cold.

That alone told Henry plenty. This man’s character was questionable too.

“I would push all the issues to the side,” Henry said coldly. “I only have one question: is Cassia registered under your family legal residence or hot?”
