Chapter 27 The Math Test

Cassia slung her backpack onto her chair and dropped into her seat.

She set the bag down and laid her head on the desk..

Cassia hadn’t slept last night. She stayed up late sketching a few designs, and now sleep was hitting her hard. Her eyes wouldn’t stay open.

When Danica walked in and saw her halfasleep at her desk, she gave a cold smirk. Hopeless. Just hopeless. There was absolutely no motivation.

Soon, the bell rang. Everyone rushed to their seats.

A moment later, Tom Gildon, their math teacher, walked in carrying a thick stack of papers. He was getting old, probably retiring in a few years. Having taught for decades, he’d seen generations of students come and go.

Everyone who’d been in his class knew one thing about himhe was serious. He’d spent most of his life studying SAT problems and took them way too seriously.

His gray hair and thick black glasses made him look like an oldfashioned teacher, but his passion for math was unmatched.

The moment students saw the stack of test papers, groans filled the room. Not again!someone whispered. Another sighed. Everyone knew what was cominga mock test. And worse, it was one of Tom’s

creations.

His tests were legendary for being hard and weird. Passing them at all was considered a miracle.

Everyone complained, except Cassia.

She stayed in the same position, head resting on her arms. Tom noticed her and frowned. That must be the new transfer student Lilian mentioned, he thought. He’d been away on a trip last week, so this was his first time seeing Cassia in person.

She looked just as awful as Lilian described.

A student transferred in this late, right before the SATs, and didn’t even bother to pay attention in class? Great. Another student who’ll drag down the class average scores.

He sighed quietly. Teachers had performance bonuses tied to their studentsscores. None of them wanted their pay cut because of one lazy kid.

Setting the stack of tests on his desk, Tom said in a stern voice, Put away your things. The test starts now. If you don’t take it seriously or if you score the lowest, you’ll fail your final evaluation.

Tom wasn’t joking this time. His tone was sharp and full of warning. Everyone in the room could feel the pressure. Faces turned serious.

When the bell rang, the test papers were handed out.

The sound of pencils and papers filled the room as students quickly buried their heads in work.

Cassia, however, stayed the samecalm and quiet. She was exhausted.

After about 15 minutes, she finally sat up. Cassia pulled the paper closer and scanned through the questions.

Her brows furrowed slightly. The test was actually well made, different from the usual pointless ones. The last few problems even looked interesting.

Most of the time, school exams were so dull they could put anyone to sleep.

Tom noticed the frowns spreading across the class and smiled in satisfaction. That was exactly what he wanted. He was determined to knock down their confidence a little.

Take your time and read carefully,he said, pretending to sound helpful. This one’s a bit tricky.

As if that wasn’t obvious.

Cassia glanced over the test paper, her eyes calm and distant. Then, with a small, careless lift of her brow, she set it down and pulled a pen from her bag.

Tom noticed her start writing and raised an eyebrow. For a second, he was surprisedbut then he relaxed.

Probably just pretending to work hard.

No way that transfer student can handle my test.

Time passed slowly. The classroom stayed silent except for the sound of pens scratching against paper.

Half an hour later, Cassia stopped writing.

She stood, walked up to the front, and placed her test on Tom’s desk. I’m done, she said simply.

Tom froze, staring at her in disbelief. The test wasn’t just difficultit was brutal. Even veteran teachers might not get it all right.

He snapped out of his trance and finally found his voice. That/fast? Aren’t you going to doublecheck your answers? This isn’t an easy one.”

Tom wasn’t bragging. He just didn’t think a girl like her could possibly pass.

But he had long foreseen this.

Cassia’s blue eyes stayed cool. No need.”

Tom remained mute.

Her tone carried a hint of arrogance.

That attitudebold and unshakenwas almost shocking.
