At the Wood Group, Vance had also been sighing over Cassia.

“Dad, what’s wrong?” Aspen came to deliver some documents to Vance. He heard him sighing, so he asked.
“Sigh…” Vance let out another heavy breath.
“It’s all because of Cassia! I thought she wouldn’t last long out there on her own, but it’s been half a month already and there’s not a single clue about her new address! If I hadn’t seen her at the school’s Spring Gala, I would have though she vanished off the face of the earth! Sigh… I still need to find her a husband. It’s driving me crazy!”
Aspen had also heard about Cassia taking the young Sterling boy and renting a place to live. He hadn’t expected her to last this long on her own with a child.
“Let’s not talk about that for now. About Mr. Sawyer…” Vance’s brow furrowed.
He still couldn’t accept that Aspen would never be able to catch Henry’s eye again.
“You don’t need to worry about that, Dad. I’ve thought of a good plan,” Aspen said.
Vance looked at Aspen curiously. “What plan?”
“Mr. Sawyer rejected me because I was unfair to Cassia. If I put in some effort with her during this time and treat her better, I can show Mr. Sawyer my sincerity. I think Mr. Sawyer still values talent. Maybe he’ll change his mind and take me as his apprentice,” Aspen explained.
“That’s not a bad idea at all.” Vance nodded in agreement.
Over the past couple of days, someone had been spreading rumors again. They said Cassia was a jinx to the Woods and the reason Aspen couldn’t become Henry’s apprentice. They also claimed Cassia had done it all on purpose.
At noon, in the school cafeteria.
Brie went to the cafeteria for lunch. Jade and a group of girls gathered around her.
“Is it true, Bric? Is Cassia really that horrible?
“A while back, you and Danica mentioned that your brother was about to become Mr. Sawyer’s apprentice, but then it just fizzled out. thought you guys were just exaggerating about how great your brother was. I never expected there was more to the story.

“Say something, Brie. Is it true or not?”

Brie held her fork in her right hand and tucked strand of hair behind her ear with her left. She furrowed her brow as if she was in a difficult position and didn’t know how to respond.
To the other students, Brie’s reaction was as good as an admission.
“Oh my God! So it’s true!” Jade deliberately raised her voice so more people could hear.
Brie looked up at Jade. “Don’t say it like that. Cassia might not have done it on purpose. I’m sure she must have had her own reasons.”
The moment Brie finished speaking, the petite girl Hayley marched over, fuming.
“Hey! Brie, I’ve been watching you this whole time. You really have a way with words, don’t you? Nobody knows if it’s true or not. Everyone’s just guessing. But you just went ahead and basically confirmed it. Who do you think you are? I used to think you were some kind of goddess and admired you so much. Turns out you’re not as innocent as you pretend to be. You’re green with envy!”
with Hayley had once been part of the crowd that misunderstood Cassia. After teaming up Cassia to play volleyball against Danica and Brie she started to admire and pay attention to her.
As she got to know Cassia better day by day, she realized Cassia wasn’t the cold, arrogant person everyone made her out to be.
She was just cool.
The type who let her actions speak louder than words.
Super fierce.
Super badass.
Brie hadn’t expected Hayley to stand up for Cassia, nor had she expected Hayley to come at her so sharply and hit the nail right on the head
The girls who had just been indignantly feeling sorry for Aspen now paused to think. It did seem like Brie’s words had been a bit… suggestive.
The students turned around and happened to see Cassia walking toward the office building.
She walked like she owned the place.
“That’s not what I meant, I…” Brie started to speak but was cut off by Hayley.

“If that’s not what you meant, then don’t say things that make people misunderstand. Besides, there’s no evidence for any of this. Even if there was, do you really think someone as distinguished as Mr. Sawyer would reject your brother just because of some petty move by Cassia? Your brother must have done something wrong himself. That is why Mr. Sawyer changed his mind about taking him as an apprentice.”
Hayley’s argument was so logical and well–reasoned that Brie was left stuttering and stumbling.
The other students listened and began to think that Hayley actually had a point.
Who was Henry? And Cassia was just an insignificant high school girl. Did she really have the power to make the legendary chess grandmaster change his mind about taking an apprentice?
That didn’t seem likely.
Rosalie, who was eating nearby, overheard the conversation and shook her head in Brie’s direction, muttering to herself, “Do enough bad things and eventually the truth comes out. Keep it up.”
That afternoon, Cassia made her usual trip to the office building to have lunch with Draven.
As she passed the cafeteria and was approaching the office building, Byron appeared from another direction.
