After school that afternoon, Cassia hadn’t had the aglio olio from that pasta shop in the alley for a while, so she decided to go.
She had just stepped out of the school gates when she spotted a familiar car parked outside.
It was Aspen’s car.
Aspen saw Cassia coming out and walked over to meet her.
“Get in. There’s something I want to talk to you about.”
Cassia looked at Aspen with an expressionless face.
“We’re not close. There’s nothing to talk about.”
Hearing this, Aspen furrowed his brow.
“Are you still upset that I didn’t bring you upstairs at the chess gathering that day?”
“You’re overthinking it.” Cassia walked around Aspen and continued straight ahead.
“Cassia! I know you’re still upset with me, but I really didn’t mean to play favorites. It’s just that you never told me you knew how to play chess. I assumed you didn’t know anything about it and figured even if I brought you up, you wouldn’t be interested, so I made that decision on my own.” Aspen chased after her, explaining.
Cassia turned back and said coldly, “I’ll only say this once more. You’re flattering yourself.”
Aspen’s frown deepened.
“I’ve heard some of the rumors going around your school. I wasn’t the one who spread them.”
Cassia couldn’t be bothered to listen to Aspen’s onsense and picked up her pace.
Aspen turned around, got in his car, and drove alongside her. “Cassia, get in. Let me take you to dinner as an apology.”
Cassia raised an eyebrow with a cold smirk. “You’re not doing this just to put on a show for Mr. Sawyer, are you?”
Cassia’s words hit the bullseye, and Aspen’s grip on the steering wheel noticeably faltered.
Noticing his reaction, a hint of mockery crossed Cassia’s face.

He got out and approached her again. “Cassia, I’m still your brother no matter what. You can’t just disrespect me like this.”
“Wrong. You’re not,” Cassia said without an ounce of warmth.
She was clear about who she loved and who she hated. After the Woods had abandoned her. she had no intention of ever acknowledging any of them as family again.
Geneva was the exception. She had nothing to do with abandoning her.
“Cassia!” Aspen reached out and grabbed her arm.
Cassia stopped abruptly, turned around, and looked down at Aspen’s hand on her arm.
“Let go.”
Two icy words, spoken flatly, devoid of any warmth.
Aspen’s expression stiffened as he released her arm.
“You want to use me to get back into Mr. Sawyers good graces? Aspen, you’ve got quite the scheme going!”
Cassia’s words cut straight to the bone, making Aspen feel completely exposed.
Cassia continued, “Instead of wasting time scheming, you’d be better off spending that energy actually studying chess. After all, your aptitude is pretty lacking.”
Lacking aptitude? Was she talking about him?
Aspen watched Cassia’s retreating figure, stunned, unable to process what had just happened.
From childhood until now, all he had ever heard were compliments and praise. He was used to being the object of envy and jealousy among his peers.
He had never imagined that one day someone would tell him his aptitude was lacking.
And it was said by Cassia, that good–for–nothing who had never accomplished anything.
Setting aside what kind of person Cassia was, he considered what she had said.
Compared to Randy, he really was lacking in aptitude.
But comparing yourself to others was always a losing game.
