Seven accelerated and caught up, the headlights washing over two figures standing at the mouth of the alley.
“Is that C?”
But which one?
Draven’s hawk–like gaze cut through the darkness, settling on the silhouette at the alley’s entrance. It was Cassia.
“Huh? Doesn’t that look like Ms. Wood? And the other one is … that pretentious lady from the Woods,” Seven said, leaning forward to peer through the windshield.
“That doesn’t make sense. We’re tracking C. Why would they be here? Don’t tell me one of them is C?”
The words had barely left his mouth when Cassia suddenly darted straight into the alley.
She moved with urgency.
“Pull over,” Draven’s voice was flat.
“What? But what about C? We have a real shot here,” Seven protested, though his hands were already turning the wheel, guiding the car to the curb.
Brie watched as Draven stepped out of the car, confusion flickering across her face. What’s this broke guy doing here?
Then her eyes landed on the car.
The sleek lines, the iconic scissor doors… Her breath caught. A globally limited edition Maybach?!
She rubbed her eyes several times in disbelief.
The car didn’t disappear, so she wasn’t imagining it.
And Draven was walking straight toward her.
His devastatingly handsome face, etched with an almost divine authority, sent a flush of heat to her cheeks. Her heart hammered.
“Mr. Grey, what a surprise to see you here,” Brie said, pitching her voice into a soft, fragile register.

As she spoke, she lifted a hand to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear with practiced delicacy.
She’d once thought he was some nobody driving a cheap sedan. She’d joined in the mockery, the condescension.
Who would’ve thought he was secretly a Maybach–driving heir?
The sting of that mistake was sharp, but a sudden, fierce gratitude for this second chance eclipsed it.
If she hadn’t run into him tonight, she might’ve missed a man who was a hundred times better than Kaleb.
She remembered Draven’s words at the school.
Before knowing his true stature, she’d felt only a faint twinge of envy that Cassia had found such a devoted boyfriend.
Now, knowing the wealth he commanded, that envy curdled into something much darker.
Her hands clenched into fists at her sides, nails digging into her palms.
A bitter, gnawing jealousy took root.
As these thoughts churned, Draven walked past her without a glance, his stride carrying him directly into the alley’s gloom.
Brie turned to watch him go.
The alley lights were dim, casting shadows over his tall frame, as if cloaking him in a muted, nocturnal glow.
Cold and untouchable.
Someone like that… I should have seen it. He was never ordinary.
Regret, hot and acidic, washed over Brie. If only she’d met him before Cassia had.
With Cassia’s background, how could she possibly deserve a rich, powerful, and devastatingly handsome man like him?
Seven glanced back at Brie, his lip curling in disain.
That fake, innocent act she’d put on earlier made his skin crawl.
There was no way Mr. Grey would ever be fooled by a woman so transparently vain and two-

faced.
Inside the alley, Victoria was cornered.

“You stinking bitch!” one of them snarled–the one with a thin rat–tail braid–grabbing Victoria by the collar, spittle flying as he cursed. How dare you call us parasites!”
Spittle flew from his lips as he yelled.
Victoria recoiled, the stench of cheap liquor and decay hitting her full in the face.
“Unhand me!” she shrieked. “I’m Vance Wood’s mother, and the matriarch of the Woods family! You dare assault an elderly woman? I’ll have the police on you!”
As Cassia reached the alley entrance, she heard her grandma’s shrill, imperious voice.
Even now, Cassia thought coldly, she’s still lecturing people like she’s standing in the Wood family’s drawing room.
“Bitch!” The ponytailed drunk shoved Victoria hard against the brick wall. “Talk to me like that again, and my friends and I will beat you dead!”
He raised a meaty hand, aiming a brutal slap at her face.
Victoria’s teeth chattered in terror. She instinctively raised her arms to shield herself.
A cry escaped her.
But the blow never landed. Cautiously, she opened her eyes. Through the narrow gap between her fingers, she saw a pale, slender arm lifted before her and blocked the slap
midair.
Someone had come. Someone had saved her.
Relief flooded Victoria. Brie must have found help.
