“That serious?” Victoria clearly remembered that Cassia didn’t seem to show much pain on her face last night, so she figured Cassia’s arm injury probably wasn’t that bad.
Cassia continued drinking her mushroom soup, completely ignoring Victoria.
From the moment Victoria turned back to pick up those shopping bags last night, Cassia had already decided she would never bother with anyone from the Woods again, except for Geneva.
“What do you mean by that? Are you saying I lied to you? I don’t even know you, so why would I lie?” The nurse’s retort left Victoria speechless.
Victoria found what the nurse said strangely familiar.
She remembered years ago, carrying baby Cassia in her arms to a chapel deep in the mountains to seek blessings. The priest there told her Cassia was a jinx. He said Cassia carried a dark energy, and keeping her at home would bring bad luck to the entire family. If it got really bad, Cassia would even bring disaster to everyone in the house.
The priest also said that if Victoria donated 10,000 to the chapel, he could help drive away the dark energy from Cassia, and he would even be willing to take baby Cassia in.
At first, Victoria hadn’t believed it, but after bringing Cassia home, the family’s business took a sharp downturn. She decided it must be Cassia’s fault. She discussed with Vance behind Geneva’s back how to get rid of Cassia.
For the first few years after abandoning Cassia at the orphanage, Victoria’s conscience bothered her and she couldn’t sleep at night. But luckily, business gradually improved, even though it went up and down sometimes. That only made her more convinced she’d done the right thing.
Later, Vance brought home another girl, Brie, saying she’d been entrusted to him by a dying friend. After that, Geneva gave birth to another daughter, and Victoria’s guilt and affection for Cassia shifted to the other two girls, and her heart eventually settled.
If Cassia wasn’t a jinx, then why did the priest say she was? Why did the family’s business decline right after she came home?
After Cassia was brought back, Victoria always felt something was off about her. Cassia only had a middle school education, didn’t seem to have much common sense, and came back with that cold, scary face and bad attitude. That just made Victoria dislike her even more.
Not only that, Cassia often lied and made things up—about trophies, certificates, medals…

Like that so–called International Mathematical lympiad certificate last time.

She actually claimed to have competed in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Even Brie had only just taken the Zrario High School Olympiad math competition. Victoria didn’t believe Cassia could possibly be better than Bric
Victoria looked at Cassia again, noticing that her face didn’t have the healthy color of a normal person, so she softened her tone a little. Cassia, come back to Wood Manor, okay? Living out here on your own isn’t easy. Especially since you have a child with you. I’ll talk to your dad, he’ll agree to it.”
Cassia’s expression stayed indifferent. She didn’t look up or say a word, just kept drinking her mushroom soup at her own pace.
She ignored Victoria completely.
“She’s not going to agree.” The young nurse answered for her.
Victoria’s expression turned a bit sour, but since Cassia’s injury was because of her, she kept her temper in check.
“Cassia, be good. When you went missing before and we didn’t look for you, that was the family’s fault. But your mom brought you home right? We can still live together like a family. As for how things ended up like this… that’s not all on me. You got used to being wild in the countryside, your temper’s a problem. I’m not saying it’s all your fault–some of it’s on me. I should have cared more as your grandma. If I’d talked to you more after you came back and corrected your attitude in time, you wouldn’t have turned out like this.”
What the hell?
The nurse was fuming. Is this old lady here to visit Ms. Wood, or is she just here to make Ms. Wood angry?
She only admitted a tiny bit of responsibility, and she still blamed most of it on Ms. Wood. Oh please!
“What’s wrong with me? I think I turned out just fine.” Cassia finally turned her calm gaze to Brie and Danica, tired of Victoria’s endless nagging.
“That’s right, I can’t compare to the granddaughters you raised yourself.”
“Cassia, if you’re upset, take it out on me. That’s between us, it has nothing to do with Brie and Danica,” Victoria shielded Brie and Danica. And for your information, Brie and Danica were worried when they heard you were hurt. They got up early and came with me, searching every hospital to find you. They care out you so much–how can you say that
about them?”
“Tch.”
