Victoria looked at Cassia, who almost never lost her temper. Normally, she would have kept scolding her, but seeing the bandage on Cassia’s arm and thinking back to how Cassia had saved her the night before…
She just couldn’t bring herself to be harsh with Cassia.
“I’m not trying to scold you. Forget it, let’s drop this,” Victoria changed the subject. “Don’t be upset that I always seem to favor Brie and Danica. You see, Brie’s talented–she’s great at everything, from music to painting to chess. Danica’s outstanding, too. She’s ranked in the top 100 at school, and she’s captain of the girls‘ volleyball team. If she hadn’t hurt her hand this time, she’d be the starting hitter for today’s volleyball tournament! As for you … You’re still my granddaughter. I’d never treat you badly
After saying this, Victoria went on, “I really thought you weren’t seriously hurt. But now … well, there’s no way you’ll be able to replace Danica in the volleyball tournament.”
Cassia just gave a cold, mocking laugh.
“Heh…”
Victoria was most afraid of that cold look from Cassia, but she pretended not to see it and kept going. “Your dad and I have already found a wonderful match for you. Last time, the Millers didn’t want you, but it’s alright—the Wilcoxs‘ son is a good catch too. Your dad checked out the guy and arranged a dinner for you to meet each other. It’s all set. We will meet the Wilcoxs for dinner on the 28th.”
At these words, Cassia lifted her head, her face full of sarcasm. “I’m only 18. Don’t tell me you didn’t know that.”
Victoria frowned. “That’s close enough. In two years, you’ll be 20.”
The nurse, standing by, looked like she wanted to punch someone.
“Ms. Wood is still in school!”
“She’s always skipping class, and from what her sisters say, she never stays awake in any of them. Her grades aren’t great, either.”
After explaining to the nurse, Victoria turned to Cassia and tried to persuade her. “If you really hate school that much, you might as well just stop going. Marry into the Wilcoxs and enjoy life as Mrs. Wilcox–wouldn’t that be better?”
Cassia acted like she didn’t hear, leaning her head and shoulders back against the pillow, staring out the window at the heavy traffic.

The more Cassia acted like this, the more frustrated Victoria felt. She kept rambling on.
“Hey!”
The nurse finally couldn’t take it and stepped forward.
“I really can’t stand this! Are you really Ms. Wood’s grandma? The granddaughter you like ran off and left you behind, while Ms. Wood saved you and got hurt for it, and you still treat her this way? Your heart is made of stone.”
“This is a family matter. It’s not your place to speak up.” Victoria was clearly annoyed.
The last nurse had always taken Cassia’s side, but this one was even bolder, not giving her any respect at all. It was outrageous.
Honestly, if I don’t put her in her place, she’ll really think I’m a pushover.
The nurse wasn’t having it. “So you can do what you want, but I can’t say anything? And by the way, I heard that Mr. Wilcox is abusive–he hits his wife all the time. The last Mrs. Wilcox isn’t even cold in her grave, and you’re already rushing to send your granddaughter over to marry him?”
She spoke so sharply, every word hit its mark.
“What nonsense is this? Who told you that? We’ve met Mr. Wilcox. He’s polite and well- mannered. He’s a good man,” Victoria’s voice rose, her anger clear on her face.
The nurse just gave a sarcastic laugh.
“There are plenty of people who seem decent on the surface, but behind closed doors, they act worse than animals.”
“How dare you talk about Mr. Wilcox like that? II tell him what you just said, do you know what’ll happen to you?” Victoria shouted furiously.
“What did I say?” The nurse tilted her head, looking right at Victoria.
“You said Mr. Wilcox is worse than an animal!”
After Victoria said that, she paused, suddenly realizing something was off.
The nurse clapped her hands. “You’re the one who said it, not me. I never mentioned his
name.”
When Victoria realized what had happened, she was so mad her teeth chattered.
