Lilian and Selena froze in place. The person who had just spoken was Abby Lane, one of the oldest teachers at Zrario High and a statelevel awardwinning remarkable teacher.

Her skills in language and writing were wellknown. For Abby to praise a paper like that? it was almost unbelievable.

Is it really that good?Selena and Lilian wondered to themselves.

Getting a perfect score on an essay was almost unheard of. Usually, teachers would take off? no matter what.

If it’s true, that’s amazing, another teacher whispered in awe.

at or two

Yeah, so who do you think wrote it?someone else asked. All the tests had been mixed together, and both names and class numbers were covered. No one could see whose paper was whose.

Who else could it be? It has to be Brie from the honors class,Lilian said, her tone a little are always amazing. She’s the only one who could pull off a perfect score.

Selena smiled right away. She agreed. That paper must have belonged to her favorite student.

How satisfying. She could already feel herself standing taller in front of the other teachers.

Exactly. No question about it. Brie is a good writer, the others said. Almost everyone thought it had to be her. No suspense at all.

Well, maybe not,Selena replied, pretending to be humble. Who knows? Maybe a dark horse will show up.

You couldn’t act too proud. You had to stay humble, at least on the surface.

While they were still chatting, the assistant principal walked in.

Oh good, everyone’s here. The scores are out. You can check them now,he said with a cheerful smile. He seemed to be in a great mood.

And one more thing, Vego University is here for early admissions. Our school has one guaranteed spot this year. Whoever gets it will depend entirely on their performance.

Selena’s eyes lit up instantly. Amazing! If a student from her class earned that spot, she could brag about it for months.

She felt so confident she could already picture it, walking down the hall like she owned the place.

Once the assistant principal left, the teachers rushed to look up their studentsscores.

Selena’s heart raced. She could already imagine all the envious looks.

Everyone crowded around the computer, eager to see who placed first.

Selena opened the computer with ease, and the other teachers quickly gathered around her.

They were about to reveal the scores, and everyone looked excited. After all, the two teachers who had just graded the papers made the results sound almost unbelievable.

Everyone except Lilian. She walked over slowly, not caring about the top score at all. She only wanted to know one thing: Was Cassia dead last?

They had made a bet in front of everyone. No one could deny it.

And if Cassia really came in last, she’d have to withdraw from school.

Finally, Lilian thought, she wouldn’t have to see that girl anymore. And she wouldn’t have t pitying looks from the other teachers.

Selena opened the score system. Everyone leaned in. The average scores flashed on the screen.

Essay Average: 108 out of 150 Honors Class: 121 Advanced Class: 95

Math Average: 113 out of 150. Honors Class: 125 Advanced Class: 101

Latin Average: 110 out of 150 Honors Class: 126 Advanced Class: 94

One look at these numbers, and the gap between the two classes was painfully clear.

They were nowhere near the same level.

Normally, the honors class always scored above 130 on average. They were the best class at Zrario High. But because the City Finals were much harder this time, their scores weren’t great. Still, it made sense. With an exam this tough, this kind of result was normal.

Still, when Selena looked at the honors class results, she frowned. They were lower than she expected.

But then she saw the advanced class scores, and her mood instantly improved.

Because the advanced class did even worse.

She sneakily glanced at Lilian. Dark. Stormy. Absolutely wonderful.

That alone made Selena feel much better.

Ms. Parker, hurry and check who got first place,a teacher beside her urged.

Selena estimated the top score would be around 400 total.

The district’s averages were unusually low this year.

She clicked through the computer slowly.

And then she saw a set of scores. Language: 144; Math: 145; Latin: 146
