Cassia’s name was already a legend on campus, but not in a good way. Almost every teacher knew who she was. One of them said in clear disdain, “What’s there to check? She probably scored last.”
All the teachers also knew about Lilian’s bet with Cassia, so they somewhat understood why Lilian looked
so tense.
“Alright, I’ll check her score now.” Selena sounded almost cheerful. She wanted to see just how bad that bumpkin had done.
During the exam she proctored, Cassia didn’t show her an ounce of respect. That still irri
Lilian’s emotions were all over the place. She hoped Cassia would do okay so their advanc look bad.
wouldn’t
But because of the bet, another part of her wanted Cassia to fail. If Cassia ranked last, she’d have to withdraw from school on her own.
So now Lilian felt like her heart was complicated and beyond words.
Selena clicked on the advanced class score sheet. Since the list was already sorted, she planned to scroll from the bottom up.
She took a deep breath and dragged the screen upward. Weird. Cassia wasn’t at the bottom.
Did they forget to enter her score?
That couldn’t be, right?
She slowed down and checked each name one by one.
Other teachers leaned in, their eyes glued to the screen, afraid to miss a single name.
Lilian stood beside them, her brows tight enough to crack a walnut.
She didn’t know why, but a strange feeling crept up inside her.
Did she need to rethink everything she knew about Cassia?
Selena finally reached the top of the list. She was about to say Cassia must’ve been left out when another teacher gasped. “Look! Cassia is in first place!”
Everyone jerked their eyes to the top line. There it was. Cassia’s name, bold and bright.
The whole office went silent. One could probably hear a pin drop on the carpet.
Selena was stunned. She pressed her lips together and looked at the scores again.
The next second, she froze like a statue.

No one spoke. They just stared at the numbers, their faces twisted with shock. It didn’t even feel real.
Lilian looked like someone had taken a baseball bat to her confidence. Her student had gotten the top score–she should have been overjoyed. But Cassia had won the bet.
And she had to bark like a dog.
She never imagined Cassia could get a score this high.
How was this even possible?
Her mind went completely blank.
She almost wanted to ask Selena if Cassia had cheated.
But when she saw the actual score, a perfect 150 out of 150, her entire brain shut down.
How? Just how?
Was Abby talking about her when she said someone wrote a perfect essay?
The teachers looked at one another in shock. No one spoke. This was the first time they had ever met a student like this.
Selena was overwhelmed with complicated feelings. She hadn’t expected that bumpkin to flip the whole
game.
Cassia had landed perfect scores in all three subjects. And Selena knew they were real.
She had been the proctor that day, and she had watched Cassia the entire time. No cheating. No whispering. No tricks. Cassia had done everything on her own.
That meant Cassia wasn’t just first in school. She was likely first in the entire city.
And there was a high chance the guaranteed spot for Vego University would land on her head too.
The thought made Selena sink deeper into her seat. She really couldn’t accept it. She taught the honors class. How could the top student not be from her class?
She felt humiliated, which deeply bruised her confidence.
Once the exam ended, everyone went home for the weekend.
On Monday morning, the school released the results.
Since it was 12th grade, the grading was fast.
The entire senior year was on edge, waiting for the outcome.
