“I could return Sterling to you,” Cassia asked slowly, “but only if you paid me 500,000 dollars for psychological treatment. Would your son and daughter–in–law agree to put Sterling back on their paper?”
Peter knew exactly what Cassia meant.
This wasn’t really about money. It was a test.
Between money and their son, which mattered more?
Money was just money. How could it ever compare to your child?
If it were him, he would choose his son without hesitation.
That was why this felt like an easy bet. Cassia was smart; why would she risk a sure loss?
Peter smiled. “Alright. What’s the wager?”
Cassia lifted her cup and took a calm sip.
“Sterling’s legal residency.”
Peter frowned, then clarified, “If his parents say yes, you’ll let Sterling go home and put him under my family paper. If they say no, you’ll keep him and let him start a new life with you?”
Cassia nodded. “That’s right.”
“Deal,” Peter said confidently.
He immediately called Gary.
Gary had just gotten home from work when the phone rang.
“Hello, Dad? What’s going on?”
Fiona took Gary’s suit jacket, straightened it, and hung it neatly on the rack.
“What?” Gary suddenly raised his voice. “You’re saying Cassia wants to give Sterling back to us?”
Fiona froze and stared at him.
“What? She wants us to pay her 500,000 dollars for therapy?”
Five hundred thousand dollars?!
Fiona was shocked.
“Did she really cure Sterling?” Gary scoffed as he kicked off his shoes, switching the phone to his other hand. “That’s a lot of money. She’s got some nerve.”

Peter’s face darkened when he heard his son’s tone.
“Forget whether he’s cured or not,” Peter snapped. “Five hundred thousand dollars to get your son back and put him on your family papers. Are you willing?”
“No,” Gary answered without hesitation.
“No?!” Peter was stunned. He turned to Cassia in disbelief.
Cassia smiled faintly and took another sip of her coffee, completely unbothered, as if she had expected this all along.
Peter felt his face burn with shame. Right then, he wanted nothing more than to reach through the phone and slap his son.
“He’s your own flesh and blood!” Peter shouted. “And you say no?!”
“Dad, calm down,” Gary said quickly, sensing Peter’s anger. “Five hundred thousand dollars isn’t a small amount. I want Sterling, but it’s just not worth it. Think about it. With that money, we could invest in a business. Why hand it over to Cassia for nothing?”
“So money matters more than your son?” Peter roared, shaking with anger.
“Well, not necessarily,” Gary replied. “If it were Ethan, I might think about it. Ethan has a bright future. That would be a long–term investment.”
“You brat!” Peter nearly choked. “Put your wife on the phone!”
He refused to believe this heartlessness ran in the whole family. Fiona was Sterling’s mother. Surely she would say yes.
Fiona took the phone.
“Hello, Peter.”
“Are you willing?” Peter asked bluntly.
Fiona fell silent.
Why was she stupid enough to take this call?
Gary slipped on his house slippers and walked into the living room. He sat down on the couch.
“What’s gotten into the old man today?” he said. “Why would he suddenly ask that? Did Cassia threaten him or something?”
Fiona asked into the phone, “Dad, why are you asking this all of a sudden? Did Cassia threaten you?”
“No,” Peter said firmly. “Just answer me. Are you willing, or not?”
Fiona raised her voice. “Dad, you already send her about 10,000 dollars every month to support Sterling.

And now she’s asking for 500,000 dollars on top of that? That’s robbery! Don’t let Cassia fool you. You should call the police!”
“So what you care about is the money,” Peter said slowly, “not your son?”
The more he listened, the more disappointed he felt inside.
