Fiona nodded.

At first, she had felt a little regret about giving up Sterling. She was also hurt that Sterling refused to acknowledge them. But after hearing Gary’s words, she suddenly felt much lighter. Her heart finally relaxed.
She picked up the phone and called Peter.
“Hello? Peter.”
“Are you willing?” Peter asked.
“Peter, I think this is a trap Cassia set for us,” Fiona said. “Gary and I talked it over. We can’t fall into her trap.”
So that meant she wasn’t willing.

Peter hung up the phone.
“I lost,” Peter said. He accepted the outcome and spoke to Cassia with shame. “From now on, Sterling is yours.”
“Okay,” Cassia replied.
A written agreement was placed between Peter and Cassia.
The next day, Seven arrived at Sterling’s condominium with an envelope.
He placed it into Sterling’s hands.
“Kid, congratulations,” Seven said with a grin. “From today on, you’re completely free.”
Cassia had told Seven to say this on purpose. She wanted Sterling to believe that she had personally moved his legal residency away from the Zimmers.
The truth was, Sterling’s name had never been on those family records.
This was a kind lie everyone chose to tell him.
Sterling held the envelope and looked toward Cassia, who was standing by the door. Then, he took the document from the envelope.
Inside were his name and Cassia’s name.
Relationships were siblings.
The moment he saw it, Sterling’s eyes turned red.

“I knew it. You’re such a crybaby,” Seven teased, squatting down and handing him a tissue.

“I–I’m not a crybaby!” Sterling bit his lower lip. He sniffed a few times, wiped his eyes with his sleeve, and slowly calmed down. The redness faded from the corners of his eyes.
“To celebrate this new beginning,” Seven said, smiling, “how about we go eat something delicious?”
Monday.
Seven parked the car at the entrance of Zrario Elementary School. He turned his head and looked at Sterling worriedly, like an old dad sending his kid off.
Sterling should have started first grade at age six. But because his parents never handled his legal papers, he couldn’t enroll in school.
Now he was ten. It hadn’t been that many years; Sterling had never once stepped onto a school campus. How could Seven not worry?
Cassia opened the door and got out of the car. She walked around to the passenger side.
Since this was Sterling’s first day of school, she wasn’t fully at ease either. She planned to walk him inside.
If Sterling said he wasn’t nervous at all, that would be a lie.
He took a deep breath, then slowly let it out. He adjusted the blue cartoon backpack on his shoulders and opened the car door.
When he looked up, the words “Zrario Elementary School” were bold and bright above the gate.
Sterling let out another long breath. His heart was beating fast.
“Let’s go,” Cassia said, looking at him, and led the way into the school.
Seven watched Sterling’s back as he walked away. He still didn’t feel at ease.
Draven noticed his expression and spoke calmly. “Cassia is with him. Don’t worry.”
Even so…
“No. I have to follow them,” Seven said, reaching to unbuckle his seatbelt.
“If you do that,” Draven said lightly, “he’ll never learn to walk on his own.”
Seven turned to look at him. “But he’s jumping straight into elementary school. Can he really handle it?”
“Do you think he should go to kindergarten instead?” Draven asked in return.
Seven couldn’t argue with him.

He had thought that as long as Cassia was there, everything would be fine. But somehow, he felt like the other kids kept staring at him as they passed by.
Even the teachers seemed to be watching him.
That made him tense.
