Chapter 40 Breaking News
Everyone was stunned.
It felt like something that shouldn’t be possible in this lifetime.
It was as shocking as seeing an alien walk across the hallway.
A failing student turning into a top scorer overnight?
How could that even be possible?
But there it was–Cassia’s name printed clearly at the top of the list.
“This has to be a joke,” someone muttered. Everyone thought the school must’ve messed up.
Brie and Kaleb pushed through the crowd and saw Cassia’s name at the top.
Brie felt her last bit of hope slip away. She had tried to convince herself it was a mistake.
But this test was too important. There was no way the teachers would get it wrong.

Kaleb also froze. He glanced at Brie and saw she looked crushed, almost like the life had drained out of her. She looked completely crushed.
She had always been number one. Always the best. And now she had fallen straight to second place. Anyone would struggle to accept that.
Kaleb understood. The City Finals were a big deal. Everyone knew Vego University would look at these scores when picking students for early admission.
Kaleb was completely lost. He had no idea how to comfort her.
Brie couldn’t accept this. If Kaleb or anyone else had taken first place, she might not feel this awful. But Cassia? That thought alone made her feel like her whole chest was on fire.
Cassia had always been the underachiever. Everyone knew it. And now she had scored higher than Brie?
How was Brie supposed to accept that?
She stood there, frozen, like her soul had left her body.
Students stared at the announcement board for a moment, then drifted away.
The advanced class students hurried back to their room to share the big news.”
“Breaking news, guys!” One student burst into the classroom, shouting at the top of his lungs.
He had fought his way through the crowd just to see the results.
The whole class already knew most of them didn’t do well, so they weren’t excited about checking the list

So when he ran in yelling about some huge announcement, nobody in the room cared. They all assumed it was just another honors student taking first place again.
Nothing new. Nothing worth stopping a conversation for. Everyone was doing their own things.
Cassia finally sat up, half–dazed. She looked out the window with a blank expression. What he was really thinking about was something else entirely. Why hadn’t the owner of that Rolls–Royce she crashed into sent her the bill yet?
She’d been waiting for days. Not a text. Not a call. Not anything.
While she was lost in thought, the boy who saw the results grew frustrated that no on took a deep breath and shouted, “Cassia scored first place in the City Finals!”
The classroom was loud enough that most people didn’t catch what he said.
When they heard “Cassia,” many students automatically thought he meant Brie.
ing. He
But Danica heard the name perfectly. She sat in the front row. And she was sure he must have said it
wrong.
“What kind of breaking news is that? Brie getting first place is totally normal,” Danica scoffed.
“Wrong. It’s not Brie. It’s Cassia from our class,” the same student announced proudly.
The room fell silent. Completely silent.
After a moment, someone finally reacted. “You’ve got to be joking. That’s impossible.”
The student nodded and said, “It’s true. You didn’t see it; Brie’s face turned pale. She looked like she got completely crushed. Watching Cassia beat her so badly felt amazing. I swear, I’ve never felt so proud.”
Danica shot to her feet. “You seriously need your eyes checked. Your eyesight must’ve gotten worse. Can’t you tell the difference between Brie and Cassia?“.
“If you don’t believe me, go look for yourself,” the student said, He didn’t bother arguing. Facts speak louder than words.
