While Brie was dragging Danica out of the room, Cassia was lying on her bed with her headphones on, scrolling through her phone.
Jake had sent a garbled message. “Cassia, I took people to the Millers‘ headquarters this morning to pick up the shipment, but they’re saying the three crates of poppies aren’t there.”
Cassia replied, “They could be lying, or they might have resold them. This is serious. Get to the bottom of it!”
“Okay!”
“Keep me updated.”
Just as Cassia was about to send that last message to Jake, she heard the wail of an ambulance outside the window.
The siren was sharp and piercing. Even with her headphones turned all the way up, her sensitive hearing still caught it.
Cassia walked to the window, pulled back the curtain, and saw an ambulance parked right at Wood Manor’s gate.
Is someone at home hurt?
Vance, Aspen, Geneva, and Victoria weren’t home, and at this hour, high school had just let out–Brie should have returned.
Danica?
Cassia’s brows drew together. She opened her door and stepped out.
As soon as she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Brie crouched on the floor, frantically scrubbing at something with a rag.
On the floor at the top of the staircase was a pool of red, thick liquid.
“What are you doing?”
The metallic stench hit her nose, sharp and unmistakable.
“N–Nothing…” Startled by Cassia’s sudden voice, Brie dropped the rag in panic.
Thud!
The cloth fell into the pool of blood, splashing droplets onto Brie’s school uniform pants.
Cassia walked over and grabbed Brie by the wrist.
“Where’s Danica?” Cassia demanded again.
This time her voice was louder, colder, edged with fury.
“T–Taken to the hospital…”

Cassia’s eyes flicked to the brand–new gold bracelet gleaming on Brie’s wrist, her eyes narrowing into a thin, dangerous line.
That look was a warning.
Brie felt like her wrist was about to snap under Cassia’s grip. She trembled violently. “I–I didn’t mean to! S–she was standing at the top of the stairs! She wouldn’t come downstairs with me… I–I just pushed her a little… How was I supposed to know she’d hit her head and bleed that much… that it would be this serious…”
Cassia had no interest in listening to her excuses. With a sharp shove, she flung Brie aside like discarded trash.
“I’m going to the hospital. Call everyone. Now.”
Without sparing Brie another glance, Cassia turned and walked out of the Wood Manor.
Danica was rushed into emergency surgery.
The rest of the Woods hurried back after receiving Brie’s call.
But before making the call, Brie had cleverly changed out of the uniform stained with Danica’s blood.
“What do you mean, Danica fell down the stairs? She hit her head and lost a lot of blood?”
“Yeah… She’s already been taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. Cassia went with her.”
Hearing the devastating news, Victoria’s vision went dark. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the floor, pounding her thighs as she wailed.
“Oh, God! What did my granddaughter ever do to deserve this? Kidnapped by criminals, suffering from depression, and just when she was finally starting to get better, she’s in the hospital again, fighting for her life! If anyone deserves punishment, let it be me! Don’t punish my Danica! Danica…”
“Danica’s illness isn’t even fully healed. She usually stays in her room, and she hasn’t shown any suicidal tendencies. She wouldn’t just fall down the stairs by herself!”
Vance exploded with rage, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at Brie.
“Who pushed her?!”
Brie’s entire body stiffened. Cold sweat drenched her back.
She was terrified. Because she had.
“N–No… Dad, it wasn’t… me…”
