Chapter 46 Jealousy and Secrets
Geneva frowned a little. “Danica, she is your sister.”
“Hmph. My sister is Brie. I don’t have some bumpkin sister like her. If people knew, they’d laugh their heads off.” Danica let out a sharp snort, her tone full of disdain.
“Danica, don’t upset Mom,” Brie said softly from the side.
Geneva had always known Danica didn’t like Cassia, but she didn’t expect it to be this bad.
It seemed she would need time to help them build a bond.
“Oh, right–how did you girls do on the City Finals? Are the results out yet?” Geneva suddenly remembered the test they had mentioned a few days ago.
Danica shot a quick glance at Brie, then muttered, “Same as usual.”
Geneva gasped. “Brie, you got first place again?”
Brie stiffened. Her face looked a little pale. “Mom, I didn’t do that great. I only got second. But I’ll work harder.”
Geneva patted her shoulder. “It’s okay. Second place is still great. Who’s this amazing kid that beat you?”
She asked curiously. Brie had always been number one. It was basically a rule.
For someone to pass her, that was a surprise.
“Hmm, I’m not sure,” Brie said quickly, brushing it off.
Danica kept quiet, pretending she had nothing to add.
Geneva nodded and comforted her daughter. “Sweetie, it’s fine. Don’t stress yourself out. Just do your best.”
“Mom, where is Cassia? Why is she always coming home so late? Doesn’t she know we’re waiting for her to have dinner?” Danica complained on purpose.
She wanted Geneva to start disliking Cassia. Before, they would eat as soon as they got home, but now Geneva always insisted they waited for Cassia.
“She should be back soon.” Geneva stood at the doorway, watching outside.

“She’s probably out with some random guy again,” Danica muttered under her breath. “Danica, don’t say things like that,” Geneva snapped. She had clearly heard it.
“An educated girl shouldn’t talk that way. It sounds awful.”
“It’s true! I saw it with my own eyes,” Danica grumbled.
Just then, a figure appeared down the walkway, getting closer. The porch light outlined her silhouette as she stepped closer.
Cassia stepped inside, her face calm and unreadable as ever.
“Cassia, you’re back! I almost want to call you just now. I was about to make you something sweet,” Geneva said warmly as she hurried over.
“I’m good. I don’t want any,” Cassia replied. She was never a fan of sweet things, so she didn’t want Geneva going through extra trouble.
Geneva paused. Cassia looked a little down. Geneva couldn’t help thinking. Did she get a bad grade? Is that why she looks so upset?
It made sense to her. How could Cassia do better than Brie or Danica?
She grew up in an orphanage in a small rural town with limited teachers and resources. Doing poorly felt normal.
Geneva looked at her carefully, then spoke in the gentlest tone she could manage. “Cassia, is school stressing you out? Are the classes too hard? Don’t worry, sweetheart. No matter what score you get, you’re still my precious girl. If you want help, I can hire a private tutor for you, okay?”
She chose every word with care. She was terrified of hurting Cassia’s pride.
Cassia blinked once before shaking her head. “No need. I’m fine with school. I’m just a little tired. I want to rest.”
“Okay, good. Eat first, then you can rest,” Geneva said quickly.
Danica heard all of this and nearly burst out laughing. She found that hilarious.
Cassia needing a tutor? Seriously? Cassia had scored first place. First place with a perfect score.
Danica felt something tight in her chest–jealousy creeping up again. If anyone needed a tutor, it was probably her.
