At that moment, Ethan came out of his room and saw both of his parents looking grim. He walked over and sat down.
“Dad, Mom, what’s going on? The food is getting cold. Why aren’t you eating?”
“Hubby, let’s eat first. That company turned us down, but there are plenty of other options,” Fiona said, patting Gary’s shoulder to comfort him.
“I’ve got no appetite.”
Gary shrugged her hand off his shoulder and headed for the door.
“You’re going out?” Fiona asked, noticing him changing shoes at the entrance.
He frowned. “I just remembered I have a dinner appointment with a client.”
Fiona glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already 8:30 p.m.
“Isn’t it too late to go out now?”
“Why do you care so much? That company rejected us, so shouldn’t I be moving on to the next one? And I work my tail off for this family! Why do you keep questioning me like a thief? I’m exhausted every day! Are you implying I’m going out to see another woman?” Gary suddenly snapped.
“I… That’s not what I meant…”
Fiona realized he was angry because of the rejection, and he was taking it out on her.
Still, she couldn’t deny that part of her suspicion was real, though they weren’t as overblown as Gary made them sound.
She just found it strange that he suddenly had a “client dinner” at this hour when the food was ready.
“I’m just worried about you,” she added softly.
Ethan’s stomach had been growling for a while, but he just sat quietly in his chair, watching his
father.
His parents had a strict rule. If the elders hadn’t started eating, the younger ones couldn’t touch their food. No matter how hungry, they had to wait,

“Alright, you guys enjoy your meal. Don’t wait for me tonight,” Gary said, putting on his sho and opening the door to leave.
“You’re not coming home tonight?”
Fiona felt a jolt in her chest.
Sometimes, a woman’s intuition was quite accurate.
Gary impantly glanced back at Fiona. The more ne looked at her, the more annoying he found this plain–faced woman.
“I’m meeting with big bosses tonight. If I drink too much, do you want me to drive drunk? Ji don’t worry about it. After it’s over, I’ll find a hotel nearby to stay,” he said, practically rushing out the door and closing it behind him.
Fiona felt that Gary’s excuse was barely an excuse at all.
Both she and Ethan could drive. If he got drunk, he could call either one of them to pick hin up. There was no real need to stay in a hotel.
Or maybe Gary was just angry and didn’t think it through.
Her husband was usually careful and attentive. It seemed unlikely he’d overlook something like that just because he was mad.
Even she could think of it. Would Gary, who was always hustling in the business world, not realize it?
The more Fiona thought about it, the more uneasy she felt, a rising panic filling her chest.
Ethan noticed his mother’s anxious expression. Thinking about how his father had acted toward her just moments ago, he guessed exactly what was worrying her.
He reached for her hand and comforted her, “Mom, don’t overthink it. Dad treats you so well. You can feel it. He’s not that kind of person. He wouldn’t do anything to betray you.”
“But why do I feel so uneasy?” Fiona pressed a hand to her chest while holding Ethan’s hand tightly with the other, worry written all over her face as she looked at him.
“Ethan, tell me… If your dad really found someone else and doesn’t want us anymore, what should we do?”
Ethan pursed his lips, his gaze softening and growing complicated as he looked at her.

Her grip on his hand made it ache slightly, and his chest ached along with it.
“If… if Dad really cheated, I wo…dn’t let him get away with it.”
Gary left the house and went to the garage to start his car.
As soon as the car pulled out, he couldn’t wait to make a call.
