Within minutes, every warehouse worker, plantation staffer, and low–level Scott Group employee in the area had seen the photo.
The funny part was that virtually everyone scrolled right past the motivational caption and zeroed in on one thing: the photograph.
“Wait–doesn’t Mr. Scott only have eyes for his wife? Why is he suddenly posing with some random girl?”
“Who is she? I’ve never seen her before. Is she one of ours? She’s gorgeous, though…”
“So the ‘devoted husband‘ act finally cracked? Honestly, can you blame him? If I saw a that beautiful, I’d lose my grip, too.”
girl
Inside the warehouse, a young woman in crisp secretary’s attire was weaving between shelves, clipboard in hand, methodically counting inventory. She was a senior at Vego University, studying executive administration, doing an internship at the Scott Group.
Richard had brought her on as his new secretary
Her name was Faye Greer, and she’d been working every single day overtime in hopes of getting noticed–right now threading through aisles doing a full stock count.
Once she finished, she’d upload the numbers straight to Richard’s system.
Faye rubbed her stiff neck, plopped onto a stool and pulled out her phone for a quick break.
She opened Instagram, scrolled through stories, and saw the photo.
There was a breathtakingly beautiful girl standing shoulder to shoulder with Richard. Even though there was a fist’s width of distance between them and nothing remotely intimate about their posture, the sight made Faye’s brow furrow. She muttered, “Who the hell is she? She got a photo with Mr. Scott before I did?”
Back at university, Faye had watched plenty of petty girls get whisked away by rich older men in luxury cars–dinners, vacations, the works. After graduation, those girls never worked a day in their lives, lounging in mansions with nonthly allowances that made most people’s annual salary look like pocket change.
Faye wanted that life. Desperately. So the moment she heard that the CEO of a Fortune 500 company happened to be from her hometown, he’d packed her bags, raced back, and talked her way into a secretary position.

She wasn’t his personal secretary–not yet–but secretary was a secretary, and she hadn’t let up for a single second.
Every chance she got to be near Richard, she took, showing up in full makeup and engineering little “accidents,” like tripping right in front of him.
But every single time, Richard either didn’t notice or just politely helped her up and walked
away.
This girl in the photo was a complete stranger–clearly nobody from their circle.
And yet she’d waltzed in and scored a photo with the boss, just like that.
In Faye’s mind, the only people who could casually take a photo with someone like Richard were either powerful business associates or someone intimately close to him.
This girl was obviously the latter.
Family? Friend? Mistress?
Faye was betting on Cassia being the mistress.
And if this girl really was Richard’s side piece, then Faye’s dream of becoming his personal secretary–and everything that came after–was as good as dead.
Just then, she looked up and saw Richard walking toward her section, the girl at his side.
Faye ducked behind a shelf to watch.
The instant she laid eyes on the girl in person, a wave of raw inadequacy crashed over her.
Faye was the campus belle at Vego University–she’d always assumed she was the prettiest girl in any room. She hadn’t counted on someone like this existing.
At least this girl wasn’t at Vego.
That was the only consolation Faye could cling to.
She couldn’t let this girl win.
Faye gripped her phone and fired off a WhatsApp message to her mentor.
The mentor was the one responsible for helping her adjust and looking after her. She was Richard’s current personal secretary, Willow Thompson.
“Willow, did you see that photo going around? I hink Mrs. Scott needs to know about this. The sooner, the better.”

After hitting send, Faye looked at Cassia with a gint of vindictive satisfaction.

“Hah. Once Willow tips off Mrs. Scott, the wife–versus–mistress showdown is going to be spectacular.”
Cassia and Richard were walking through the outer warehouse zone. Cassia noticed the staff giving them strange looks.
Cassia could let it go. Richard couldn’t. He spotted Faye half–hidden behind a shelf, peeking at them, and waved her over.
Faye’s heart somersaulted–Mr. Scott was waving at me? She smoothed her hair, straightened her outfit, and walked over with her most elegant stride.
“Why is everyone staring at us like that?” Richard asked.
“Mr. Scott, it’s probably… probably because they think you two look good together,” Faye managed, caught off guard by his bluntness.
“Look good together?” Richard realized what had happened and laughed, waving it off. “You’ve all got the wrong idea. She and I aren’t like that–she’s just a regular friend. I brought her today to show her around the warehouse.”
Even as the words left his mouth, Richard was thinking, If you people knew the girl standing next to me was your actual boss, the expressions on your faces would be absolutely priceless.
