Bric kept up the faux–gentle act, even letting her eyes brim with tears.

Seeing Brie cry, Danica’s heart nearly shattered; she hurried to wipe Brie’s tears and comforted her. “No way! Bric, with the way she is, she thinks she’ll get a guaranteed spot at Vego University? Not a chance! Don’t worry–I’ll make sure that recommendation is yours!”
Brie stopped crying, her damp eyes lifting to Danica. “You promise? How will you make sure?”
“Brie, did you forget? The Vego recommendation isn’t only about exam scores–there’s also arts and character.” Danica reminded her.
“But Cassia isn’t just strong academically–her arts profile is decent too. At the New Year’s showcase last time, she played piano and won first place…”
At that, Brie recalled how she’d wanted Cassia to embarrass herself at the show–only to get slapped in the face by the result.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got; she wished she could tear Cassia to pieces.
“Hmph! So what if her grades are good and she can play piano? For a Vego recommendation, she still has to pass the character review! Just based on her brawling with those punks last time, her ‘guaranteed spot‘ is a pipe dream forever.”
Danica’s words eased Brie’s mind; a smile blossomed on her face.
Right–there’s still character! With Cassia so arrogant and rude, how could she ever beat Brie, the sweet, sensible, beautiful, kind one?
When the time comes, coax Danica to embellish and stir the pot a few times, and the Vego recommendation will be hers again.
Thinking of that, Brie’s anger ebbed–though she couldn’t show it.
She “kindly” advised Danica, “Danica, you mustn’t go around spreading ‘Cassia fought with punks‘ as a rumor! That would hurt her reputation. Once her reputation dips, her character grade willl suffer and once that suffers, she’ll lose the Vego recommendation.”
“Relax, Brie, I know.”
Danica promised aloud, but in her heart, she’d already drafted another plan.
Cassia, you made Brie sad–you even made her think of ending her life. I will never let you off!

Now that she’d found Brie, Danica felt at case. She told her that Victoria and Geneva would pick them up after school, then returned to her own classroom.
After Lilian finished announcing grades, she held a thirty–minute class meeting to give the usual holiday safety reminders, then dismissed everyone.
Finally, the bell rang. Students drifted out one after another; Cassia slung her bag over her shoulder and stood to leave through the back door like always.
But Lilian quietly called her back.
“Hey, Cassia, wait a sec. Come to the office–I need a word.”
Cassia felt a flicker of impatience.
Jake had called earlier–there’d be a major gemstone–gambling expo soon. She needed to get back and make arrangements fast and had no interest in this snob’s rambling.
“What is it? I’ve got other matters–don’t want to waste time.”
She kept her tone as polite as possible.
Lilian thought, Wow, this girl is bold. Doesn’t even respect her teacher?
But she couldn’t lose her temper.
After all, the girl had ranked first in the entire grade–and helped the advanced class snag first overall–letting Lilian really rub it in Selena’s face. Just thinking about it was delicious.
Lilian smiled ingratiatingly. “It’s quick, just a few things. I won’t take much of your time.”
“Alright.”
Cassia glanced at the time.
It was still early, and she didn’t want to share a car with those two scheming girls anyway. She might as well stop by the office to kill some time.
Cassia followed Lilian into the senior–year teachers‘ office at Zrario High.
Most teachers had already gone home–Selena included–so it was quiet; only Lilian and
