Dreamlike, weightless–like a startled swan taking flight.

From the passenger seat, Bric glanced back and caught the picture–perfect scene, jealousy flashing in her eyes before she could hide it.
Seriously–beating her on exams was bad enough, but even looks? Cassia had her beat there,
too!
Brie forced the jealousy down and swapped it for her gentle, well–behaved mask.
Danica turned to Victoria, whining sweetly, “Grandma, Brie’s birthday party is in a few days- can we buy her a new dress, please?”
“We should. All your classmates will be there; we can’t lose face,” Victoria said, immediately telling Vance to transfer money to Brie’s phone account later.
“Grandma, the family’s still recovering. Don’t splurge. I don’t mind–party or no party–as long as everyone’s happy,” Brie chimed in at just the right moment.
The line made both Victoria and Vance feel wonderfully at ease.
“Don’t pinch pennies. Buy something expensive, buy something nice. When the classmates come, I want them to see how perfect my darling granddaughter is. Not like some people–no manners at all,” Victoria added, deliberately cutting a glance at Cassia beside her, her words barbed.
“Mom!”
Vance jumped in, warning her to stop–what if Cassia got angry and cut the company’s line to Cosmo Group?
Thankfully…
Vance checked the rearview mirror, watching Cassia with care.
Good. The girl was focused on her phone and hadn’t “heard” a thing.
Did Cassia not hear Victoria? As if. She simply couldn’t be bothered to fire back–but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t file it away.
Danica sang out in a syrupy voice, face lit with delight.

Victoria, amused by her younger granddaughter’s cheer, let the gloom of sharing a car with Cassia ease a little.
After a few “heh–heh” chuckles, she noticed Cassia hugging her phone, fingers flying.
From the start, it had been screen, screen, screen. Gaming? Not a word–so unserious!
Victoria craned toward the phone for a peek.
“@¥@¥ # %%…”
A stream of characters she couldn’t understand suddenly pouredout at high speed.
What on earth?
She pulled back, hugged Danica closer, and scooted an inch away to keep her distance from Cassia.
This girl’s got a screw loose, huh?
Back home, Cassia tossed herself onto the bed.
In the car, she’d already sent a coded ping to Jake, and he should have the jade–wagering event’s lined
prep up shortly.
Knock, knock-
A thunderous pounding rattled the door.
Cassia had barely rolled onto her side when the door swung open from the hall.
Brie walked in with an armful of dresses, voice soft.
“Cassia, am I bothering you?”
“Mhm. Noisy.”
Impatience crossed Cassia’s face.

If she really feared disturbing her, she wouldn’t have hammered the door like that.
Schemer. Cassia wasn’t about to play nice.
Brie’s eyes reddened at the corners.

“Sorry, Cassia. I just wanted to bring these to you. My birthday’s in a few days, and I was worried you might not have something suitable for the party.”
Cassia’s cool gaze flicked over the dresses in Brie’s arms.
She’d seen every one of them.
“So, you’re giving me things you already wore?”
“No, that’s not what I mean. I did wear them, but they’re basically new. I only wore each a couple of times–and they’re freshly cleaned.”
Brie’s face stayed soft; inside, she was already calculating. On the night of the party, once her classmates saw Cassia in Brie’s hand–me–downs–how embarrassing would that be?
“Then, why can’t I wear something new?” Cassia said, then added, almost lazily, “Something no one else has worn.”
Brie sneered inwardly, What right do you have to wear new clothes? You’re just a backwater- orphanage bumpkin.
“Take them. I’m not interested,” Cassia said, lying back again.
She shouldn’t have humored Brie at all–but she’d let one line slip.
“Cassia … I really didn’t mean it like that … you’re misunderstanding me…” Brie’s voice wobbled into an exaggerated sob.
Hearing the commotion, Victoria came upstairs. One look at pretty–as–a–pear–blossom Brie in tears, and she didn’t bother asking–she went straight for the scold.
“What did you do this time?! Brie is your sister! How can an older sister bully the younger one?”
“Grandma, it’s not Cassia’s fault. Don’t blame her,” Brie murmured, swiping at her “grievous”
tears.
Anyone watching would think Cassia had gone too far.
