Draven had to fight the urge to stride out there and stand beside her. He had to trust Cassia. This girl–wasn’t it true that every time they met, she handed him a brand–new surprise?
So, what would it be this time? He found himself looking forward to it.
Out front, the crowd was still boiling over. Jackson and his buddy glared at Cassia like they wanted to burn a hole straight through her.
Cassia let out a cold little laugh.
The only reason they were this loud and aggressive was because they were guilty and scared.
The noise swelled and rolled across the gemstone betting market. By now, the whole place was stirred up, and the gemstone auction was about to start. That man should be showing up any minute now.
Cassia lifted her chin slightly, eyes sweeping past the ring of onlookers toward the outside.
Sure enough, a middle–aged man in a perfectly tailored suit squeezed in through the crowd a moment later.
“What’s going on? What’s going on? Why are you all crowding here? Who’s fighting?”
You could tell just by his clothes–and his bearing–that this man was no ordinary person.
“The boss is here. The boss of this gemstone market is here!”
Someone in the crowd shouted, and the noise cut off at once. Silence fell like a dropped curtain.
Jackson and his buddy realized in an instant who this new arrival was–the owner of the gemstone–betting market. They rushed to speak first. “Boss, it wasn’t us starting trouble, it was this woman–she went way too far!”
“Yeah, Boss, I clearly apologized to her, but she just wouldn’t let it go. She kept forcing me to admit I harassed her!”
“The truth will speak for itself.”
Cassia stayed calm, her tone light as she pushed back.
The owner turned toward the sound of her voice. When he saw her face, his eyes lit up. He

quickly clasped his hands together respectfully. “Ah, Ms. Wood, you’re here too this time!”
Cassia nodded, lips curving. “Mm. I heard you picked up some rare, top–tier stock this round, Mr. Bennett, so I came to take a look.”
Finally showed up, Sean Bennett.
Her smile was faint, relaxed.
Standing there, the two of them looked less like a big–shot boss and a young girl, but more like
she was the one he answered to.
What?
The crowd was stunned.
Had they heard that right? The mighty owner of the gemstone market was actually being that polite to some teenage girl?
A few of the onlookers were long time clients of Sean. One of them couldn’t help blurting out, “Mr. Bennett, are you serious? You’re a big boss. Why are you being so polite to this girl?”
Sean shot the man a look full of contempt, as if he were living under a rock.
Please. Cassia was one of his biggest clients. Whenever she came to gamble on gemstones, she played big. And every time, the stones she bought opened into sky–blue glass or other top–grade ones–pieces so rare and expensive that once they hit the market, people would tear each other apart for them.
Jackson and his buddy felt the wind change instantly. The boss… knew this girl?
Could she actually be some hidden big shot?
“Ms. Wood is a friend of mine,” Sean said simply.
The crowd erupted.
If she knew someone like Sean and could call him a friend, then there was no way this girl’s background was simple.
Jackson and his friend felt pure regret wash over them. Their guts practically turned green. It’s over. She really was a big shot–and they had just tried to lean on her and push her around.
Now that they’d offended the gemstone market boss’s friend, getting rich overnight was a fantasy. Forget getting rich–whether they could walk out of this market in one piece was the

Jackson’s buddy leaned in and whispered, “We should slip out of here before they notice us.”
“Yeah–right now. Or we’ll end up dead and won’t even know how.”
Jackson agreed wholeheartedly.
But just as they tucked their tails and started to case away, Sean had already circled over to their side. Hands clasped behind his back, he asked mildly, “Which one of you stepped on Ms. Wood’s dress? Didn’t apologize, and even mouthed off and insulted her?”
“Him!”
The two men were terrified. Jackson’s buddy didn’t even hesitate–he pointed straight at Jackson.
“You-!”
Jackson stared at him in disbelief.
So much for brotherhood, huh? Selling me out this fast?
