Danica was the only one left fuming.
“This is embarrassing!”

She had tried to embarrass Cassia, and now she was the one humiliated. She seethed inside.
Fine, Cassia. Enjoy it while you can. I will find plenty of chances to get even.
The next class was history, dull enough to make the whole room fade into a daze.
At last, the bell rang. The sound cut through the haze and announced the end of the torture.
But the day was not finished. It was far from finished. There were still politics, language, literature, and more–all six courses in total. When the daytime classes ended, they still had after hours, which lasted until 9:30 at night. Only then would the students be free from the day.
The morning crawled until lunch, and the seniors burst out of the building like someone had finally lifted a lock. They valued every spare second, so many of them ran home as if time were a luxury item.
Some students refused to let even a moment slip. They grabbed a quick meal in the cafeteria and rushed back to their desks, forcing their tired eyes to focus. If they’re tired, they let their heads rest for a moment, then pushed themselves straight into the next subjects.
The daylight faded inside those slow hours of reading and lectures.
Winter shadows fell early. When the seniors finished their last class, their stomachs felt empty, and the sky outside had already sunk into night.
Cassia stood up and stretched her stiff limbs. She moved toward the back door with long and steady steps.
Danica had darted out earlier. She had dashed through the front exit to meet Brie so they could enjoy a rich dinner at home.
Cassia had no interest in returning to the Woods‘ residence. She did not want to sit through another oily feast. She wanted something clean and simple. She chose the small pasta shop near campus and planned to order a plate of aglio olio.
She let out a soft sigh. After dinner, she still needed to drag herself back for after hours. She needed to last until 9:30 before she could rest.

She finished her pasta and walked back to the school in a slow and easy stroll.

A narrow alley waited between the pasta shop and Zrario High. Almost no one used it. It stayed dim and quiet like a little secret the city had forgotten.
She passed it every time she went to cat, and she passed it again on her way back.
Her mood shifted the moment she neared it.
This alley was one of the places she liked most. It was part of why she chose the pasta shop.
At night, only two streetlights glowed here. One had already died. The other flickered in a weak and stubborn rhythm. It blinked like it could not stay awake.
The quiet brought comfort. The empty air felt like a space that belonged only to her. Every time she walked through it, her body loosened as if the weight of the day slipped away.
Cassia stepped toward the alley like she always did, but stopped when a sharp voice echoed from inside.
“Help! Please, someone help me!”
The voice sounded like a girl. Fear shook every word.
Cassia frowned.
She liked this place because it stayed silent. Someone had disturbed her peaceful corner, and the irritation struck her nerves.
“Hey sweetheart, stop yelling. We are inviting you to dinner, that’s all.”
A man’s voice drifted out next, thick and smug.
“Yeah. Calm down. We are not bad guys.”
Cassia stood still.
From the sound of their voices, she figured more than one man was blocking the girl.
Cassia walked inside the alley. She took a few steps and saw three boys surrounding a girl.
The three of them looked like they crawled out of a thrift store at midnight. Their hair was a mess. Their attitudes were worse. Anyone would move aside just to avoid looking at them.
Cassia’s presence made all four of them turn their heads.

“Holy hell. Another girl,” one of them said.

The boy with acne–covered cheeks stared with his mouth open. Saliva dripped out like he forgot how to act human.
“She is gorgeous,” he muttered.
The other two behaved with a little more control, but their eyes gleamed with the same hunger.
They had been annoyed about sharing one girl. Now they had two. They felt thrilled.
“Cassia?” the trapped‘ girl called out.
She knows me?
Cassia turned her gaze toward her.
