Chapter 187

I spent the entire drive to the academy reminding myself not to push too hard. Trust had to be earned slowly, and I had already learned that trying to rush things only created new problems.

Kyra sat beside me in the back seat while talking almost nonstop about the activity fair. Her excitement filled the vehicle, and for once I found myself smiling instead of worrying about everything I had ruined.

“I made a list,” she announced proudly.

I glanced over.

“A list of what?”

“A list of clubs I want to join.”

She unfolded several pages of notes.

I blinked.

“Several?”

Kyra nodded.

“I like being prepared.”

The academy grounds were already busy when we arrived. Students, parents, and guardians moved between booths set up across the large courtyard.

The academy served young wolves from several territories. Modern education mixed with pack traditions here, which was one reason Conrad and Amorah had eventually agreed to let the twins attend.

Kyra immediately spotted several friends from orientation. Before running toward them, she stopped and looked back at

“You’re coming too, right?”

I laughed softly.

“I’ll be right behind you.”

She seemed satisfied with that answer. Then she disappeared into the crowd with enough energy to power the entire academy.

I spent the next hour following at a comfortable distance. It gave me the chance to observe without interfering.

The students seemed comfortable here. They moved easily between ordinary academic booths and demonstrations focused on wolf training and territorial customs.

One group practiced scent identification exercises. Another demonstrated controlled shifting techniques under instructor supervision.

The balance impressed me. It felt like a place where young wolves could learn to exist in both worlds.

ventually I found Kyra near a display for student leadership programs. She was talking animatedly with several other girls.

One of them noticed me first.

“Is that your aunt?”

Kyra hesitated briefly.

Then she smiled.

“Something like that.”

It was not exactly true, but it was probably the closest description available.

A little later I found Zane standing near a competitive training booth. He was watching older students complete an obstacle course while pretending not to care.

“You’ve been standing here for ten minutes,” I said.

He immediately frowned.

“No, I haven’t.”

I folded my arms.

“You have.”

He sighed dramatically.

“I was just looking.”

“Of course.”

His eyes narrowed.

“You sound like Kyra.”

I considered that.

“I’ll try to recover from the insult.”

For a moment I thought he might laugh. Instead he rolled his eyes and returned his attention to the fraining field.

Still, I noticed he remained there until the demonstration ended. Whatever he claimed, school clearly interested him far more than he admitted.

The afternoon passed quickly after that. Parent groups held discussions while students explored different activities and programs.

I found myself sitting with several guardians discussing school schedules and transportation arrangements. It was such a normal conversation that it almost felt strange.

Sitting there talking about school lunches and attendance policies felt unexpectedly peaceful.

By the time the event ended, I was tired in a way that had nothing to do with stress. It was the pleasant exhaustion that came from spending time with people instead of hiding from them.

When we returned to the estate, I found Amorah feeding the baby in the family room. The sight still felt natural in a way I could never have imagined months ago.

She looked up as entered.

“How was the academy?”

I sat across from her. “Busy.”

Her lips twitched slightly. “That’s not an answer.”

I shrugged.

‘Kyra made friends. Zane pretended not to enjoy himself while obviously enjoying himself.”

Amorah laughed softly.

“That sounds accurate.”

The baby made a small noise. Both of us immediately looked down.

For a moment neither of us spoke. Then Amorah adjusted the blanket and settled back against the couch.

“Thank you for taking them today.”

The words caught me off guard. Not because they were dramatic, but because they were sincere.

“You don’t need to thank me.”

“I know.”

She held my gaze.

“I’m thanking you anyway.”

Something tightened in my chest. A few months ago I would have given anything to hear those words.

The silence that followed felt comfortable rather than awkward. It was probably the first time we had ever sat together without tension hanging between us.

After a while Amorah spoke again. “I used to think apologies fixed things.”

I looked at her carefully. “And now?”

“Now I think consistent behavior fixes things.”

I nodded slowly. “That’s fair.”

She glanced toward the baby.

“People make mistakes.”

I almost laughed at the understatement.

“Some of us make very large mistakes.”

Amorali’s expression softened.

“Yes.”

Neither of us mentioned Conrad. Neither of us needed to.

For the first time, our conversation wasn’t about him at all. It was about two women trying to move forward from choices neither could change.

We talked for nearly an hour after that. The topics were simple but meaningful.

Motherhood. Family. Regret. The strange reality of watching children grow faster than expected.
