Chapter 188

The moment Lyra finished explaining what she had seen outside the academy, I contacted security and ordered an immediate review of every camera feed connected to the school.

I did not like strangers taking photographs of my children, especially when they thought nobody was watching.

Lyra sat across from me while the security team worked through the information. She remained calm, but I could tell she was unsettled by what she had witnessed.

“I know what I saw,” she said.

I nodded once. “I believe you.”

Amorah entered the office carrying the baby a few minutes later. One look at my face told her something had happened.

“What is it?” she asked.

I gestured toward the chair beside me. “Sit down.”

She immediately became serious. The baby remained asleep against her shoulder as she lowered herself into the chair.

“What’s wrong?” she asked again.

I explained everything Lyra had reported. By the time I finished, Amorah looked irritated rather than frightened.

“So someone took pictures of Kyra.”

I nodded. “That’s what it looks like.”

Amorah sighed heavily. “I hate that sentence.”

“So do I.”

The room fell quiet as security continued working. Nobody liked situations involving the children.

An hour later, one of the analysts entered carrying a tablet. His expression told me he had found something

“We located the photographer.”

My attention sharpened immediately. “Show me.”

The analyst placed the tablet on the desk. Several images appeared on the screen.

The same man appeared outside the academy on multiple dates. He never approached the students directly, but he was present far more often than coincidence could explain.

Amorah leaned forward. “How many times?”

The analyst enlarged another report. “At least seven separate occasions.”

The answer immediately changed the situation. One photograph could be curiosity.

Seven photographs were something else. I studied the images carefully.

The man never attempted to hide his presence, but he also never interacted with anyone. That bothered me.

“Did he follow them?” I asked

The analyst shook his head. “No evidence of that.”

Amorah looked toward me. “Then why keep taking pictures?”

I didn’t answer immediately. I wanted facts before assumptions.

The analyst continued speaking. “We’re still investigating.”

I nodded. “Keep digging.”

The meeting ended shortly afterward. Security continued working while the rest of us returned to normal family responsibilities.

At least we tried. The baby woke up the moment we entered the family room.

His eyes immediately locked onto Amorah before she even spoke. I watched him carefully.

“He knew you were coming.”

Amorah smiled slightly. “He always does.”

The infant reached toward her. His tiny hands moved with surprising determination.

I had noticed similar things repeatedly over the past few weeks. The baby reacted to family members before seeing them.

Sometimes he seemed aware of people approaching long before anyone else noticed. The healer had no explanation.

Neither did I. A little later, Kyra and Zane returned from their activities.

Both of them immediately crossed the room toward the baby. “I got here first,” Kyra announced.

“No, you didn’t,” Zane replied.

“You were slower.”

“You cut in front of me.”

Their argument lasted less than ten seconds before the baby started laughing, not that the baby knew how to laugh already. Somehow that immediately distracted both of them.

‘He likes me better,” Kyra said.

Zane rolled his eyes. “He laughs at everybody.”

The baby reached toward Zane. That immediately ruined his attempt to appear indifferent.

“Okay,” Zane admitted. “Maybe he likes me too.”

The rest of the afternoon passed peacefully. For a while it almost felt like the photographer situation didn’t exist.

that illusion ended during dinner. The baby became unusually restless before anyone said a word.

He stared directly at me while sitting in Amorah’s lap, I frowned.

“What’s wrong?”

Before anyone answered, security called my phone. The timing made everyone freeze.

I stood and answered immediately. “Yes?”

The officer’s voice came through clearly. “We found something.”

I looked toward Amorah. “I’m coming.”

A few minutes later, we were both back inside the security office. The analyst who had spoken to us earlier was already waiting.

“We traced the photographer further.”

I folded my arms. “And?”

The analyst displayed several reports. “He isn’t connected to any criminal organizations.”

That was good news. At least partially.

“What is he connected to?” Amorah asked.

The analyst hesitated. Then he opened another file.

Before he could explain, I looked at the information myself. The answer immediately made more sense than anything else we had considered. ·

I exhaled slowly. “A reporter.”

The analyst nodded. “Yes.”

Amorah stared at the screen. “Seriously?”

The analyst enlarged the identification records. “He works independently.”

I studied the man’s background. Most of his work focused on unusual wolf-related stories and community investigations.

Nothing immediately suggested danger. That didn’t mean I liked it.

Amorah leaned back in her chair. “So this isn’t some stalker.”

“No.”

The analyst pointed toward additional records. “But he’s been asking questions.”

My attention sharpened again. “What kind of questions?”

The analyst opened another document. “Questions about unusual wolf abilities.”

The room became very quiet. Neither Amorah nor I spoke immediately.

the analyst continued. “He appears to be investigating rumors.”

I already knew where this was heading. The answer became obvious before he finished speaking.

The baby. Somehow rumors had already started spreading.

I rubbed a hand across my face, “Of course”

Amorah looked equally frustrated. “We’ve barely left the house.”

The analyst nodded sympathetically. “Rumors move quickly.”

That was unfortunately true. Especially in wolf communities.

The baby had already displayed abilities that healers couldn’t explain. The brief shift alone would have created gossip if the wrong person heard about it.

Now someone was paying attention. I looked toward the analyst.
