Chapter 3
Holmes’s POV
“Mate severance.”
The words landed like a stone in the corridor.
For a heartbeat I thought I had misheard her.
My wolf stirred beneath my skin immediately, a low irritated growl vibrating through my chest.
Severance?

From me?
I stared at Amorah as if she had spoken madness.
The Luna of Silvercrest Pack stood across from me, pale and shaking, her scent thick with grief and blood. Yet her eyes- those stubborn, defiant eyes–remained locked on mine.
“You heard me,” she said hoarsely. “I want a mate severance.”
The corridor had gone quiet.
Servants froze where they stood. Guards shifted uneasily, pretending to stare at the walls while their ears strained toward us.
My wolf snarled in annoyance.
The bond between us was faint–barely a thread compared to most mates–but it still existed. Her words tugged at it like claws scraping bone.
“You’re not thinking clearly,” I said, forcing calm into my
voice.
“You lost the child. Your wolf is unstable. Return to your chambers.”
Her expression hardened.
“My wolf knows exactly what I saw.”
That accusation again.
My patience snapped.
“Enough.”
My voice cracked through the hall like thunder.
The guards straightened instantly.
“You’re embarrassing yourself,” I continued coldly. “A Luna screaming accusations in the middle of the pack house?”
Amorah’s wolf stirred weakly—I could feel it through the bond, wounded and unstable—but she didn’t back down.
“Mate severance,” she repeated.

Chapter 3
My wolf bared its teeth inside my mind.
Impossible.
She spoke the words as if they were hers to command.
A Luna without a fully awakened wolf had no authority to initiate such a ritual. Everyone knew that.
Which made her declaration even more ridiculous.
I straightened slowly.
“Escort the Luna back to her chambers,” I ordered the guards.
“And lock the doors.”
Amorah’s eyes widened.
“You can’t…”
“I can.”
The guards moved forward immediately.
One grabbed her arm.
She struggled weakly, her injured body clearly failing her. The scent of dried blood clung to her skin, reminding me of the healer’s report earlier.
Miscarriage.
The pack’s long–awaited heir gone before it even drew breath.
I felt nothing.
If she had behaved like a proper Luna instead of throwing hysterics, the situation would never have reached this point.
As the guards dragged her down the corridor, she twisted back toward me.
Our eyes met.
For a brief moment my wolf paused.
A fleeting pang of unease flickered through my chest.
Then I crushed the feeling.
Weakness had no place in leadership.
When she disappeared around the corner. the tension in the hallway dissolved into whispers.
Bethany stepped forward almost immediately.
“You shouldn’t have to endure this,” she said softly.
Her voice carried the calm, soothing tone that always eased my temper.

I accepted her anyway.
But after the marriage, reality settled quickly.
The council grew impatient.
An Alpha without an heir invites challengers.
And an heir cannot come from a wolfless bloodline.
Amorah tried.
I will admit that.
She managed pack affairs well enough.
Negotiated disputes.
Handled council duties.
But none of that mattered when night fell and the Luna’s chambers remained childless.
Then Bethany returned after Zach’s death.
A grieving widow carrying twins that belonged to my brother.
She asked for nothing.
Demanded nothing.
She simply listened.
When the council pressed harder, she reminded me I was still Alpha
And when Zane and Kyra were born…
Everything changed.
Strong children.
My blood.
Proof that Silvercrest would survive.
My wolf stirred proudly at the thought.
I looked at Bethany now.
Compared to Amorah, the choice had been obvious long ago.
A knock interrupted my thoughts.
“Alpha.”
My Beta’s voice came from outside.

“Enter”
He stepped inside and bowed.
“The Elder Council has announced a gathering,” he said. “All major packs will attend.”
A council convention.
Normally this would be routine.
