Despite the momentary panic seizing his chest, Zane's expression remained perfectly neutral. Years of ruthless business negotiations had ingrained that instinct deep within him.

A split second later, logic prevailed. If his mother truly knew Elara's identity, there was absolutely no way she would have waited this long to interrogate him.

She was bluffing.

Zane let out an easy laugh. "Mom, the woman I'm seeing is a respectable daughter from a good family, not some random mistake. The issue is, she hasn't officially agreed to be with me yet. Right now, it's just me chasing after her. The second she finally accepts me and we're actually ready to meet the parents, I'll bring her straight to you."

Elena snorted softly. "So she's not some escort from a club anymore?"

"I never said she was an escort," Zane replied patiently. "I merely said she was a good girl. Everything else was entirely your own imagination."

"Well, you better keep your tracks covered. If I catch you, there'll be hell to pay."

Zane held his ground. "There's nothing to cover up. We have nothing to hide."

"Hmph. I'd love to see exactly how 'nothing to hide' this little secret obsession of yours really is."

"Mom, I just didn't want you worrying over it."

"A good match is orchestrated by fate itself. What is there to worry about?"

"Good things take time to blossom," Zane countered smoothly. "Once we're officially together, you'll be the absolute first to meet her."

Zane practically bolted the second he finished his meal.

Watching her son race out the door as if he couldn't bear to stay a second longer, Elena immediately picked up her phone and dialed her best friend.

Zane scanned his face to unlock his apartment door, but the place was completely empty.

Disbelief washed over him as he called out, "Elara? I'm back."

Elara was standing right outside the door in the hallway. Her gaze was completely fixed on his waistline, admiring how the expensive leather belt perfectly accentuated his lean, sculpted form.

How had she never noticed how incredible his waist looked before?

Had she really been entirely focused on his face this whole time?

"How are you back so early?" Elara finally asked.
