Jack Part II

They were twins, so alike in so many ways and yet pulled apart by their sameness.

He and his brother had been at odds since they were boys. Wilder tired of the constraints of the royal family rules and regulations decided he wasn’t going to stay in the fae realm and wanted to cause chaos in the human world. Rafferty always the one who needed to put out the fires of his brother’s catastrophes decided this time he wasn’t following his brother’s lead and stayed behind. He remained in the fae realm with his parents and sister to fulfil the family obligations and to breathe without the weight of being the lesser brother over him. Without Wilder around he could be himself and it was enough. Wilder living with humans meant Rafferty could be more of the wicked fae he was born to be.

A thought dawned on him. Since Wilder liked being around humans so much perhaps he could find a real human wife. Rafferty wanted his mate, only her and forever her but maybe he could convince Wilder to stick with what he’d grown to love over

the years.

“Don’t even think it brother,” Wilder glowered at him.

“Think what?” He tried to play dumb.

“We are twins. I can read your feelings as sure as they are my own. You can feel my love for her as sure as you feel your own. She was meant to be mine.”

“Would you both table this shit?” Jacqueline put her hands on their chests and shoved them away. She stepped between them and right up to Jack. “You are supposed to be my father?”

“Not supposed to be. I am. I can smell your mother in you.”

“Well that’s not creepy at all,” she made a face at him and extended her hand to him. “I am Jacqueline.”

“You wish to shake my hand?” Jack tilted his head to one side to regard the woman curiously.

“Why not? It seems every time I shake a guy’s hand today that I see some weird gold thing happening. I’m wondering if it’s going to happen to all the men or just those two.” She jerked her thumb over her shoulder at Rafferty and Wilder.

Rafferty looked at Wilder and with a quiet whisper murmured, She is magnificent.”

“She is brilliant. You should have heard the pitch she came up with to save a college boy’s career. It’s ingenious and wild. She was made for this kind of work. Smart. Beautiful. Resourceful. Strong and defiant. She is the perfect mate.”

“For me,” Rafferty agreed with his brother with one caveat.

“For us,” Wilder said in a huff, his eyes never leaving the woman who was staring down the Northern King with all the bravado in the world. “She is perfect for us. We will figure this out, come up with a plan.”

“Your plans always favor you, Wilder. They always put you on top, regardless of anyone else.”

“Do you want to be on top? I’ll take bottom and she can be right in between us, sandwiched like the best filling in the world,” Wilder shot him a wicked grin which caused both of them to have a mental image of what the reality could be like.

Rafferty shifted uncomfortably next to his brother.

“Twice the pleasure, twice the fun,” Wilder whispered in his ear, “imagine the sounds she would make.”

He elbowed his brother furiously, “not the time or place.”

Rafferty stepped away from his brother’s wicked whispers and moved to stand closer to Jacqueline. “Are you okay, my princess?”

“I’m fine. He won’t shake my hand and he’s just staring at me. It’s weird, right?”

Rafferty looked at the older man and furrowed his brow, “your highness, I must say while we all appreciate how you are no longer blustering all around us, we do wish very much for you to at least speak.”

Jack looked at Rafferty and surprisingly his eyes were moist, unshed tears making the ice–blue shimmer. “She is stunning. Look at my daughter. She is so stunning.”

“She is.”

Jack reached out his hand and gently reached to touch Jacqueline’s cheek, but she pulled her head back warily.

“You are my child. Why do you fear me?”

“I’m not sure where you come from, but I was raised in the New York state’s system. Touching is not cool when you’re a foster kid, at least not in the homes I was in.”
