Jacqueline couldn’t stop laughing. Her ribs ached with it. Her cheeks hurt from being pulled so tight. Her eyes burned from the tears streaming down her face.
River and Rafferty singing Carol of the Bells was quite possibly the most stunning display of poor pitch, horrible timing, and comedic relief she’d ever experienced. River seemed to think she was an operatic level singer and was flamboyantly throwing her arms in a thrashing motion around the small stage while Rafferty stood with the
microphone in his hand speaking the lyrics instead of singing
“It’s painful to watch.” Bar whispered at the table.
Wraith gave an exaggerated shudder, “I love when my mate
screams but not like this.”
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen. Why is he so stiff?” Jacqueline asked Wilder, who looked absolutely thrilled at his

siblings making fools of themselves.
“He is very uncomfortable.”
“I love this though,” she wiped her cheeks with her palms as she beamed in Rafferty’s direction. “This is how I want us to spend our lives.”
Wilder cocked his head to one side while Bar raised both of his eyebrows high in his forehead.
“You want us to sing karaoke in a small–town bar forever?”
“No.” She shook her head, “I want us to be laughing and happy. I want us doing things which make us uncomfortable and stretching our personalities. I want our children to know their parents don’t take themselves so seriously they can’t
have fun.”
Bar hooked his arm around her neck and nuzzled her cheek, “you really going to have my baby, Jacqueline?”
“Definitely.” She smiled at him. “My mother didn’t tell me
which baby is coming first only that I’ll have a little girl, but I also know I’ll have a big family.”

Wilder grinned a huge smile and then he nodded, “I want a little girl with that.”
“With what?”
“That smile on her face. I want her smiling like you are tonight.”
Rafferty’s “thank fuck” erroneously spoken into the microphone as the song came to an end made Jacqueline erupt again into laughter.
River hopped off the stage after bowing with a flourish to the thunderous applause of the packed bar. She raced and jumped up to straddle Wraith where he sat in his chair, “I was
amazing, wasn’t I?”
“Amazing,” he agreed as he wrapped his arms around her middle but the eyes he made at Jacqueline over her shoulder told a different story and it made her giggle louder.
“What are you going to sing, mate?” Rafferty asked as he grabbed Wilder’s beer from his protesting brother and downed it.
“I know what we’ll sing,” Bar said as he got off the chair. 3/12

“We are going to sing.” He corrected and held his hand out to her as he got to his feet.
“We?” she made wide eyes.
“Yes.” He nodded. “I’ve never done this before. My entire
life has been serious and stoic and made for diplomacy.
I’ve spent the last several years living a solitary life while occasionally mixing with the town. I’ve sat and observed the traditions in this town, but I want to participate with my
mates. Come sing with me, Jacqueline.”
“What are we singing?” she asked as she immediately raced
after him.
“Twelve Days of Christmas.” He grinned at her over his shoulder as he dragged her to the stage.
“Why?”
“My father hates the song with a vengeance. Pretty sure in a past life someone must have tortured him with the song.

Feels like something I want to bellow tonight, and we can get the entire pub singing along so they won’t really hear how
bad I sound.”
“Can you sing?”
“Only in the shower or the rare time I drive my truck
anywhere.”
She giggled as she let him adjust her microphone to her height. “I tried out for the school choir when I was a kid. Turns out I can sing but I turn blue when the choir director gives the pretty girl the solo and makes me stand in the back.”
“Oh,” Bar frowned at her with mock sadness, “did you beat up the pretty girl for stealing your solo?”
“No. Who wanted to sing about the grinch anyway?” she pouted batting her lashes and then grinned as Bar leaned over and kissed her lips softly earning them catcalls before they even started.
Bar held her hand as the music started and true to his prediction, they soon had the entire bar singing along with them and they were barely heard over the din of the group. Again, Jacqueline was laughing loudly and Dana, the server 5/12

who’d been plying them with beer for the last few hours was now standing on the bar with her hands flailing as she
orchestrated the bar in the final countdown.
Bar scooped Jacqueline up in a bear hug and spun her
around in a circle before nearly bringing her back to the
table.
“That was a fun, good choice,” Wilder smiled at them.
“You need to do one,” Jacqueline sat on Wilder’s lap looping her hands around his neck and kissing his cheek.
“Oh, we should hold that thought,” Rafferty spoke softly, “something wicked this way comes.”
“What?” she frowned at Rafferty and then realized what he was saying and felt the approaching person. “Oh man why is he coming to ruin our party.”
“This is going to be interesting,” Rafferty’s eyes widened as
he looked at Bar.
“What is happening?” Bar frowned and then he sniffed the air, “oh not this fucker again. I thought you dropped him
home.” 6/12

“I don’t know how he got back here either,” Wilder frowned at Bar’s question.
Rafferty looked at Jacqueline, “did you know this? What I’m
seeing, did you know?”
“No.”
“Your mother didn’t warn you?”
“Nope.”
“What are you two talking about?” Bar was getting frustrated with the conversation and the knowledge of who was
approaching the bar.
Jacqueline looked to Bar and pulled her lips apart, “this is
going to be crazy.”
She watched as Bar used his ability to mimic powers and used Rafferty’s gift of sight and his lips flared and his nostrils. stretched and he growled angrily.
“He doesn’t deserve this.”

“Bar, it is not for you to decide,” Jacqueline whispered softly.
River leaned closer, “what is happening?”
“Bjorn found his way back to town. Not sure how since Wilder dropped him back in their palace, but he’s here.” Jacqueline looked to the door where it pushed open and the Crown Prince of the Bear Realm entered the pub. At first his eyes were searching for Bar but then his eyes started flitting
around the bar frantically as if searching, his face a mask
of confusion and anxiety. His eyes landed on Dana, and he gripped his chest and dropped to one knee.
“Abso–fucking–lutely not,” Bar snarled furiously, moving through the room with a speed which belied his size. He
grabbed his brother by the scruff of the neck, dragging his protesting and flailing frame out.
Jacqueline, Wilder and Rafferty chased after him with River
and Wraith on their heels.
“Bar,” Jacqueline tried to calm her mate down as he threw his brother across the road onto the opposite sidewalk and into a lamppost. “Bar, stop.”
“He killed my mate. He doesn’t deserve to have one.”

“Bar, stop!” Wilder and Rafferty tried to pull him backwards, but he easily shrugged them off and lunged at his brother
again.
“Fuck he’s strong,” Wilder huffed with exasperation as he moved again to catch Bar before he crossed the street to beat Bjorn into the ground. “Can we at least ask him why he’s
here?”
“Who the fuck cares?” Bar snapped back, spittle
accumulating at the corner of his lips. “All I know is he is leaving, either on his feet or in a body bag.”
“Bar stop!” Jacqueline froze his feet in place. “Stop. Right now, stop. You are angry and rightly so and we can talk about this with my mother later but there is nothing she does without reason. Do not lower yourself to his level.”
“He’s a sniveling worm.” Bar glared at her, “release me, mate.”
“I will when you promise me you will not kill him or beat him up. We need to let him talk.”
“I can’t promise that.” Bar’s teeth were elongating as his

chest heaved. “Why does he get a mate? Why Jacqueline? He killed mine.”
“Yours died, yes but you have another in front of you right now. It doesn’t take your pain away or your anger away but for pity’s sake please listen to the mate in front of you. This is not the way.”
Rafferty helped Bjorn to his feet, “what are you doing here? How did you get here?”
“I have a friend who is fae. He owed me a favor. I called him when I overheard my father’s plans. I came to warn you about what he was doing.” Bjorn swallowed as he rolled his shoulder out. “I want the crown, Bar. I want my birthright but not like this. I don’t want to hurt you. What happened before was a mistake, the worst kin of mistake but it was. I told the nurse to switch out her fertility pills for birth control, but I never told her to triple them and I sure as fuck didn’t threaten that I’d kill your child if it was born. She lied. I used her own jealousy of her sister to manipulate her, I admit it. She was jealous of her sister having a strong and powerful mate and that is how I got her to do what I wanted but I didn’t threaten her and I sure as fuck didn’t tell her to poison her sister. I fucked up, okay, I admit it and I’m sorry. I am a greedy son of a bitch.” He cautiously approached Bar, “Dad 10/12

found out your mate banished her own sister. I don’t know where he got the information but he’s intending to get Jacinta from the temple and using her to get to you all through Jacqueline’s mother, Winika. He’s going to take Winika
hostage using Jacinta and putting you in a dungeon,” he pointed at Jacqueline, “to keep control.”
“Why are you betraying him?” Bar gave Jacqueline a grateful
look as she released his feet from the frozen ice on the
ground.
“Because it is the least I can do after what I’ve done.”
“That’s not the only reason.”
“No. If we overthrow Dad and his plot, I can take over the throne and rule the way I want to, fairly and with honor. It gets rid of him and his insanity, and it hopefully lessens the debt I owe you, Bar. I’m sorry for playing my part in what happened. I am. Please. I’m not lying to you.”
Bar looked at Jacqueline who nodded in confirmation. “Fuck!”
Bjorn looked longingly to the entrance of the pub where a small crowd had gathered, including Dana, who was watching the argument carefully. “Please let me meet her?” 11/12

“Nobody in this town knows what I am, Bjorn.”
“She will be terrified of me. She’s human.”
“Possibly, probably, I hope she rejects you.” Bar said coldly. He grabbed Bjorn by the neck and glared into his eyes, “if you fuck me over, I’ll personally tell her the entire truth of what you did, your greed and your selfishness because she and her family are kind. Her family saved my ass once upon a time and there isn’t a selfish bone in her body. She won’t put up with your shit.”
“I understand. Introduce me, please?”
“Come on,” Bar huffed furiously and then he looked at Jacqueline, “you and I are going to talk about freezing me in place.”
“If I offer a blow job will it lessen your anger?”
As Wilder and Rafferty both snickered when Bar stumbled over his feet at the question, Jacqueline decided this could have gone a lot worse.
