Returning to Rooster’s with Bar clutching his brother by the neck in a move which Jacqueline knew was not a friendly brother’s touch, she found herself wondering what the hell her mother was thinking. It was one thing to give Bjorn a human mate but an entirely different thing altogether to give
him one from the town where Bar made his life over.
“I have so many questions,” Rafferty whispered in her ear as they approached the crowd.
“You and me both,” she shrugged in disbelief. “I mean I was
there with her today. Why didn’t she tell me?”
“If she tells you all the things which are going to happen in your life, what kind of fun would that be?”
“I guess,” she muttered as she followed a steaming Bar back
inside.
“Everything okay Bar?” Lex asked as he looked at Bjorn
worriedly.
“My brother decided to pay a visit.” He waved impatiently at Bjorn, “friends this is Bjorn. Bjorn these are my friends 11:37

Tabby raced over with her hand extended, “welcome! I’m
Tabby.”
“Not interested,” Bjorn ignored the hand and made a face at Bar. “Is there nowhere quieter?”
“No.” Bar shot him down and waved to their booth, “you can join us but don’t piss me off.” He looked at Dana, “Dana,
we’re going to need another round.”
Bjorn’s eyes tracked Dana as she nodded at Bar nervously before she looked at Bjorn with a confused expression. “Her
name is Dana.”
“Yeah.”
“She feels it,” Bjorn swallowed as he watched, “she’s human and she feels it.”
“You’re one very lucky beast, Bjorn,” Wilder said as he pushed past him to take a seat beside Bar as if behaving as a barrier between brothers.
“Why do you say that?”

“Because Bar likes Dana so he’s unlikely to murder her to get revenge for your past actions.”
“How many times do I need to say it was an accident?” Bjorn growled at Wilder. “I admit my jealousy over him having a mate and starting to family before me. I’m the eldest. I wanted to be first at everything and so I let my greed get ahead of me and I made stupid decisions, but it was a mistake. I didn’t intentionally set out for her to die.” He hissed angrily as he started to slide into the booth but rolled his eyes when Rafferty pulled him out and waved Jacqueline in and then got next. “I’m not here to hurt my brother.” He finally took the seat and then gave River and Wraith dirty looks, “even the Princess is here to judge me?”
“Oh, I’m not here to judge you,” River laughed in his face, “I already judged you. I think you’re a giant asshole. I didn’t like you before I spent time getting to know my new brother–in–law. Now that I know Bar and I know how good he is, how kind his heart is and how gentle and loving he is to my best friend and my brothers, I’m sticking around to have his back. Personally, I think Bar should have buried you beneath his cabin and lived his life walking on your bones.”
“My brother and I need to settle our differences but having all these people weighing in our personal issues is not 3/11

helpful.” Bjorn gave her a nasty look.
“Look at my sister–in–law with that face one more time, Bjorn, and I’ll beat you into next month.” Bar interjected. “She’s my family now and I’ll die to protect her.”
“Am I not your family?” Bjorn snarled impatiently.
“No.” Bar said bluntly. “Blood doesn’t make family, Bjorn. Love, respect, kindness, having each other’s back through good and bad, that is family. People who purposefully stab each other in the back to get ahead and to further their own agenda.”
“I’m sorry. Fuck I don’t know how else to apologize, Bar. You are my little brother, and I love you and I know I let my own aspirations for myself taint my judgment and our relationship, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love you.”
“You have a fucked–up way of showing you love your family,” Wraith commented. “River told me what you did and you’re
an asshole.”
“I can’t deny I’m an asshole. I was literally raised to be an asshole. I’m a king in training.”

“Yeah, I heard you’re a chip off the old block. You are exactly like your father.”
“I’m not.”
“No?” Wraith pushed while everyone sat back and let him. “Let’s see when I compare apples to apples how it pans out and you tell me what I’ve missed. You and your father both used your brother’s size and brilliance to push your own agendas. You both think the most important thing in the world is expanding your empire and the feeling of power you get from stepping on people less powerful than you. You both think that you’re the most important people in whatever room you’re in, regardless of the company you keep.” Wraith snickered, “for the record neither of you are. My wife is far superior to you, and I know she told me earlier that the most powerful person on the planet is sitting right there curled up under your brother’s arm.”
Bjorn rolled his eyes, “if you say so.”
“I know so.” Wraith laughed at his expression, “it’s killing you to sit here and admit you aren’t the top of the food chain in this room. Which brings me to your pride and your arrogance which you directly inherited from your prick of a father. You are so self–important you couldn’t be bothered to look a 5/11

single person in this place in the eye because you think they
are beneath you.”
“That’s not true,” Bjorn protested. “I’m uncomfortable here
because it’s open, full of strangers and I don’t have my
security with me. I also have a mate very nearby who is
oblivious to what I am, and it is taking everything in me not to shift and drag her away.”
Wraith gave a laugh, “which is another way you’re just like your father. You aren’t even thinking about her, are you? All you care about is your wants and needs but it hasn’t occurred to you she might be freaking out already because she’s oddly attracted to the guy her friend clearly loathes.”
“What would you know?”
“I know as a human mated to a supernatural being, I still felt the bond. Right now, there is a woman over there, with her heart racing and her palms sweating and her mind cloudy and confused with lust and longing and a perverse need to wrap around you and instead you pretended not to even see her. All you care about is fixing your bruised ego. Like your father, you don’t care about anything but your own desires, in this case, to kiss your brother’s ass.”

“She’s feeling all those things?” Bjorn looked to the woman at the bar who was sending sideways glances in their direction as she waited for the beer order to be put on her tray.
“Yeah,” Wraith confirmed, “she is feeling all those things.”
Bjorn blinked and gave his head a shake, “I don’t deserve
her.”
“No shit,” Bar threw in.
“Look,” Bjorn looked at his brother seriously, “you don’t trust me and I get it. I’ve been a selfish bastard but I’m telling you today was a revelation for me. I won’t lie. I don’t want you back in the castle. You make me look weak, Bar and as a king it’s not a good look. That’s a me problem though and I need to sort through my issues. I miss you but I admit I like not having people look past me to look at you.”
“Nice.” Jacqueline snorted.
“I like being the center of attention, sue me.”
“Why are you here then? If you don’t want me in the castle,” Bar let his voice trailed off. “You’re here because you don’t want me in the castle. If you can help me against Dad then 7/11

I’ll stay here.”
Bjorn shrugged, “yes but it’s also the right thing to do and damn it Bar, I’ve done so many shitty things to you, the last thing I want to do is make our relationship worse. I know I can’t fix the past, but I can try to make amends for the future. Dad, as you know, has moles, plants if you will, in nearly every single realm who feeds him details. The minute he got a whiff of a problem in the Frost kingdom, he reached out
to his mole. He got wind that Winika came out of the temple sobbing about how her daughter was taken from her and
sent away and their familial bond broken. He had his mole
push for information from the King’s chamber’s housekeeping staff and learned Jacinta was sent away.”
“And?”
“And he thinks he can get her to help him with his plan to imprison Jacqueline and use her as a personal conduit to the
creator.”
“He’s an idiot.” Jacqueline said with a laugh. “I gave a him a small glimpse of my power and his first thought was that
he wanted it for himself. I didn’t even show him everything.
I simply showed him a connection between me and my mother. There isn’t a prison built which could hold me. As for 8/11

Jacinta, she’s useless. She has no powers. They’ve all been
stripped. She has no family connection, it’s all been severed.
She is of no use to him.”
“He thinks Jack will trade –”
“No, he won’t.” Jacqueline shrugged, “did you not hear that
the familial bond between Jack and Jacinta is broken. He
actually feels no more for her in his heart than he would the housekeeper you mentioned. He still however feels a strong
bond with me.”
“I feel you’re sharing too much with him,” Bar sighed.
“He’s not lying. He’s here to mend fences and to repair relationships. It’s an uphill battle but I sense no lie in him.” Jacqueline put her hand on Bar’s forearm. “I am not telling you to trust him or to forgive him. I know I could not in your
shoes. What I will say is in this moment, he is telling the truth. He is here to provide the information to allow you to do what you need to protect me because he thinks I need protection
and to overthrow his father.”
“You would take the throne by force?”
“Yes. He,” Bjorn looked away, “he’s become far more 9/11

concerned with power, and he’s even consulted with witches to try to prolong his life, his longevity to stay on the throne. He’s losing his damn mind.”
“Lovely,” Jacqueline shook her head and then looked at Dana who approached cautiously.
Bjorn stood up the minute Dana set the tray of beers on the table. “You are stunning.”
Dana blushed, “uh, thanks?”
“Good grief,” Bar muttered under his breath. “The man has no chill.”
“Fuck it.” Bjorn grabbed Dana by the shoulders and looked into her eyes, “you are my mate, Dana and I accept our mate bond. You were made for me and I for you and I will spend all of the rest of my days being the beast you deserve. I will worship you on my knees and treat you like the queen you are. I love you.”
“You are really weird,” Dana whispered in shock at the intense way he was staring into her eyes.
