“Enough,” Wilder spoke up. “While I appreciate you all want

to spend time with her, she’s refused to see you right now. We

are her mates first and foremost and we will do everything to

keep her safe and happy. For now, you will give her space, or

we will help her find a way to avoid you forever.”

“Now listen here,” the king blustered, all his rage coming through as he turned a shade of cobalt which should have frightened the twins but instead all it did was make them lean deeper into the chairs relaxed, “you will not keep my daughter from me. I have missed too much time.”

“Do you hear what I’m hearing Raff?”

“Me, me, me? I, I, I?” Rafferty commented as if he stared the king down without any kind of fear. “I’m hearing a lot of exactly what Jacqueline mentioned. Fae who are so wrapped up in their own wants and needs they are forgetting she has some of her own. Yesterday you built a cage of ice to protect her from us. Now you are annoyed because she is putting

up her own barriers. Who the fuck do you think you are, King

Jack Frost of the Northern Realm? You can’t come at our mate like this and expect us to simply back you on it. She is scared. She is hurting. She is angry.”

Wilder nodded his agreement. “I am going to ask you to

leave my office and my building and do not make me do as I taught Jacqueline yesterday and put a spell which bars you from returning here without express permission.”

“That was a cheap move,” the prince grunted angrily as his

arms crossed and uncrossed over his chest.

“I protected my mate. She felt you would have simply popped into her space and she was correct. You would

have dragged her back to the palace to endure more of the

insanity.”

“I need my daughter,” Winika said softly. “Please Wilder. Talk

to her. Make her understand.”

“Give her space, Winika and she will come to you on her own. She has a curiosity and a strength in her which will make her want to know more. She is inquisitive and smart, and

she can troubleshoot problems with clarity and conviction. If she weren’t my mate and she wasn’t a fae, I would

consider her an invaluable part of my team. Her boss has been proclaiming her skills for a full year now, but I’ve been wrapped up in a few other projects until this new situation came up. She has a fire in her and watching her yesterday

“It’s selfish,” Jacinta wrapped her arms around Winika. “I know Dad told her how much mom has suffered without her and the fact she’s simply ignoring Mom for her own needs is selfish. I would never hurt my family like this. I am here for you, Mom. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Actually, you are going somewhere. Out of my office. Now.” Wilder snapped.

“Now hold on,” the king ruffled his hair worriedly.

“She is coming with me to Colorado next week. We’ll have her in the middle of the cold and her powers will increase. She knows you will be there because I volunteered you to work with Wraith on the slopes. She want to learn how to ski. You can offer services but no more pushing. No more forcing her to do what she isn’t comfortable doing. I have no need to make any more money in this world. I have no problem disappearing off the planet entirely, taking my brother and my mate and vanishing completely.”

Wilder watched as the crown prince stomped his foot furiously and ice crystals began quickly moving in his direction. Wilder and Rafferty both moved in tandem, vines quickly cutting up the crystals, shattering them and then a heat boiled up from the floor.

“Two against one, we win,” Wilder mocked Jack’s frustrated grunt. “Do not make me bring my sister in here to deal with you Jack, Crown Prince of the Northern Realm. She’s been itching to make an example of you over the horrible way you’ve been treating our family since Jacqueline went missing. She’s been practicing for war for years. She’ll be queen someday and she means to prove what she can do. Now get the fuck out.”

“Enough of this,” the king hissed. “We are leaving. We will meet you in Colorado.”

“I will send you the reservation information.”

“No!” Winika wailed.

Jack kneeled in front of his wife, “my love, the boys, as much as I hate to admit it are right. She is scared of us, and it is our fault. We will give her space and meet with her again when she is less volatile.”

“I will stay with you mummy,” Jacinta promised loudly.

“Such a good girl,” Winika patted her cheek.

In minutes, the Frost family were out of his office and Wilder looked at his brother. “What if she’s right?”

“How did Jacinta get the hit to the head? She still bears the

scar.”

“The nurse was hit from behind. Maybe Jacinta knocked her out. Moved Jacqueline. Came back and smacked her own head on the changing table as part of her plot. I never noticed today how whiny she is.”

“We haven’t been around her in twenty–five years,” Rafferty sighed, “but fuck me that was annoying. What do we do?”

“We protect our mate. We’ll need to find a way to keep Jacinta from knowing we suspect her. We will keep Jacqueline safe while we do some investigations behind the scenes. Maybe we can get Jacinta to slip up, and we can get her to confess somehow.”

“We can try but this is crazy. What if the culprit has been

right in their house all along?”

“Then the Frost family is about to collapse, and I don’t know

what that means for all the realms, but Jacqueline is worth it,

Rafferty.”

“For our mate, I’ll follow your lead but if she ends up hurt

because of Jacinta and we didn’t warn anyone.”

“We’ll talk to our parents and River. They’ll help us keep her

safe.”

“River. Right. She’ll help us for sure.”

As the brothers stared at one another, Wilder realized it was

the first time in decades they were on the same page. He

hoped it was enough.
