Finding herself seated between Wilder and Rafferty in the back of a limo she was nervous.
“Relax, mate.” Wilder said quietly. “We are going to dinner, not to the guillotine.”
“Feels like a death sentence,” she muttered as she looked
down at the clothing she had on. She’d put on her favorite
dress, a little black cocktail dress, and yet sitting next to these two, she felt underdressed.
“It is nothing to stress over. It is a meal. We will share a meal, walk you back to your apartment and then that will be it. We aren’t going to do anything you don’t want, and we will not be doing anything to pressure you to do what we want.”
“Why don’t I believe you?” she muttered with annoyance.
“Because we did not get off on the wrong foot. You are overwhelmed with information and feelings, and we pushed
when we should have paused. I’m sorry,” Wilder said quietly.
“I’m sorry too,” Rafferty spoke with equal gentleness. “Wilder ang I got so caught up in finally finding our mate but als90:48

with the bitterness of having to share a mate that we were more focused on our own wants and needs and for this I will forever have regrets.”
“Regrets?” she looked to him curiously. “Why?”
“Because finding our mate should be an exciting, thrilling, happy moment and we’ve made it stressful and sad for you. It is an awful feeling to know instead of celebrating, Wilder and I are needing to make amends to a mate who is on the
cusp of hating us. I am hoping years from now that this is something we laugh over but right now, I am disappointed in
our behavior.”
She was silent as she stared at her hands clasped on her
knees.
“I know you have questions, and we will answer any which
you have. Nothing is off the table. We will be honest with you.
completely.”
She bit her bottom lip and then nodded, “why do you two hate each other?”
“We don’t hate each other!” Wilder turned to her in surprise.

“You don’t exactly scream two people who love and respect
each other.”
“Raff?” Wilder looked at his brother. “Do you want to take this
one?”
Rafferty nodded, “Growing up, we were the typical twins. Dressed the same. Participated in the same activities and
sports and hobbies. We were inseparable. However, as we got older, Wilder started doing things which were more and more outrageous. Mother said it was because he wanted to stand out. I think he just wanted to be the bigger dickhead of
the two of us.”
Wilder licked his teeth as if the comment was distasteful.
“Why?” she looked at Wilder. “Why be more and more
outrageous?”
“Why not? The more I pushed boundaries, the bigger the
rewards.”
“You were looking for attention?” she questioned.
“No.” He frowned at her and then grimaced, “it is already in my personality to be a bit,” he searched for the word, 3/6

“mischievous and playful. The notoriety fuels my ego. The more I do, the more infamous I became. Soon it became a situation where if I was just quiet and did nothing, I was
bored out of my skull.”
“He also got away with a lot because he could talk himself out of trouble like it was a career,” Rafferty accused with a sarcastic tone. “He would throw a party where clothing was optional and somehow he was never the one to get into trouble over it. The more I helped him with his plans and projects, the more I ended up as the scapegoat. I don’t charm and sweet talk as well as Wilder does. The more trouble we would get in, the more he would get away with and the more I’d get trapped up in the fallout. The worst was when he threw a party here in New York, actually, he ended up getting us arrested by the NYPD. He talked his way out and I got left behind. I couldn’t schmooze the cops the way he did.”
“You left him in jail?” she shot a horrified look at Wilder. “Also, what kind of party lands you in jail?”
“The kind which ended up with a bunch of naked fae dancing in Central Park, but we couldn’t just disappear into thin air because you know, humans were around watching. So, we ended up arrested. At the time I was hanging around with 4/6

the chief of police’s son and so I got out. I immediately left to get my lawyer up and out of bed to get Rafferty out. By the time I got back he was already out. He fucked off to LA and didn’t talk to me for like five years.”
“You didn’t speak at all for five years?”
“Not a word. We’d go home for dinner, and my twin would
pretend I didn’t exist.” Wilder accused him angrily. “You
behaved like I didn’t exist.”
“You left me in jail, Wilder and that was only one of the many times I got caught up in your foolish plans. Remember the time you wanted to steal the throne at River’s birthday party? We got grounded for months!”
“Well, now you’re struck with me.” Wilder smirked. “We have a mate to tie us back together again. Admit you’re happy about it deep down.”
He made a grunting noise.
Wilder leaned his head to whisper conspiratorially, “the priestess told us that if you reject the mate bond, it automatically lands on both of us. You cannot reject one and keep the other. It’s the bond you’re rejecting and not the 5/6

person. You have to take all or nothing.”
“Lovely,” she sighed and at their inquisitive stares she sighed, “not that I want to accept or reject either of you one more than the other.”
“For the record, Rafferty had his own set of scandalous things happening. He once waited until our parents were away on a trip and got into their vault to steal some jewels for a girl he wanted to impress. The daughter of a visiting dignitary”
Jacqueline turned her head to Rafferty
