Dinner Date Part II
The question seemed to stun the two men and Rafferty shook
his head.
“No. While my mother is the queen of the south, there are
communities of fae all over the world and each one is ruled
by a head, similar to a mayor of a city. One of the heads of
state came to visit with his daughter and I flirted with her. I was very young and she was very flirty. I stole a necklace from my mother’s vault. I was busted. I lost the necklace, the
girl and my freedom for three full months. Mom made me
work in the kitchen to learn the valuable of money.”
“So not my sister.”
“No.”
“Did you ever sleep with my sister?” she asked Wilder.
“What? No. Oh my god. No. We always considered her very much like a little sister. We’re close in age and we were pushed together a lot while our parents were in talks and doing royal duties. However, I’ve never found her sexually attractive,” Wilder said seriously. “I find her as attractive as I would River.”

“Same.” Rafferty commented.
“Well, there’s that at least.” She whispered more to herself than anything.
“Hey,” Wilder reached out and touched his finger to her chin. “You need to know we heard what you said earlier today. It made us look at her in a new light. We watched her today. We haven’t spent time with her much in the last fifty years or
so.”
His words made her gasp, “fifty years? How old are you?”
“Mother told you we approach our centennial. We would be
roughly ninety–six this year. Rafferty and I started building
our own lives roughly fifty years ago. Long before there was
internet and so on, we created personas which allowed
us both to inherit businesses from an uncle,” he made
quotations with his fingers, “who passed his businesses onto
As she bristled, Rafferty reached out and put a calming hand on her knee. She wanted to slap it off but then he spoke.

“We are trusting your intuition Jacqueline. If she had anything to do with your abduction, we would find out. It’s going to be hard to do though. She would have needed to knock out the nurse; whisk you away and then cause her own injury which
left her unconscious.”
“Unless she faked being unconscious,” Wilder said seriously.
She looked at the two men, “you believe me?”
“Yes. If she didn’t move you herself, she was part of it.”
“Are you just saying that to get in my pants?”
The question had both brothers laughing loudly at the
question.
“No, my mate,” Wilder lifted her hand and pressed his lips
to her knuckles, “this is not about getting into your pants. It is about listening to our mate and trusting the instincts she brings to our relationship but more importantly it’s about opening our eyes and looking at our own missteps and mistakes. Nobody questioned her too much because she was injured back then. She had a concussion. She had a large
laceration on her head. She was distraught. She swore she

saw nothing. She was hurt the same way as the nurse.”
“A nurse who was questioned far more than she was,” Rafferty continued. “Her reputation was ruined because many people presumed she had to be part of it.”
“Something I don’t understand is how she brought you to New York. We can’t typically teleport blind. It is usually to a familiar place or something we can picture.”
“I’ve been thinking on that,” Rafferty commented to Wilder.
“What if she premeditated? If she came to New York, saw the hospital, put it in her mind and knew this would be the last place her family would look.”
“Why would it be the last place?”
“There is such a low population of fae in New York,” Wilder said seriously. “It’s not cold enough for northern fae. It’s not hot enough for southern fae.”
“Why do you live here?”
“Because there aren’t a lot of fae,” he chuckled. “It’s a pain in the ass to be the prince of the royal family. There is always someone wanting something. I prefer to hide here from the 4/6

crazies of the royal court.”
“Crazies?”
“Groupies?” Rafferty offered an alternate description. “More than once, we’ve had housekeepers slide into our beds or visitors slip the guards some money to get into our personal chambers. The potential to be a princess is exciting for a staffer who is very low level in the chain of things.”
“How though? Surely just having sex with a prince isn’t going to make you a princess.”
“If they get pregnant,” Rafferty shrugged. “My mother and father both had very real conversations with us.”
“We made sure any time we were intimate with anyone we were protected and were very selective in our partners.”
“Question.” Jacqueline lifted a finger up in the air.
“You can ask us anything. We told you this, Jacqueline.”
“If you knew about the mate thing, about having one person your soul is supposed to be connected to spiritually, emotionally and also physically, why did you have sex with

anyone? Why not wait for your mate and share a special
bond that nobody else can be part of? I mean, I’m not a
virgin but I didn’t know about mates. I feel like it’s something special for your kind, fae, so why not treat it with the
reverence you make it seem to be.”
Rafferty took a deep breath and nodded, “I understand what you’re asking but most fae find their mates in or around their twenty–first year. You weren’t even born until we were in our seventieth year. It is a long time for a male of a species which was created with sex in mind to use only their hands.”
“I guess.”
“Can I ask a question,” Wilder cleared his throat, “how many
partners have you had?”
A gleam in her eye made both men groan with frustration.
“I tell you what, gentlemen. You give me a definitive number, and I’ll share my body count with you.”
