Dinner Date Part III
“How are we going to catch her?” Jacqueline asked Wilder and Rafferty as she sat nestled between them in an intimate restaurant booth. Appetizers sat on the plate in front of them and they were sharing.
“We have a few ideas. Here is the thing.” Wilder held up a thick crusty piece of bread to her lips. “Royal fae are powerful, incredibly powerful. She is only five or six years. younger than us.”
“Wait, what? She doesn’t look a day under thirty! I mean I figured she was like a teenager or something when she took
me.”
“No. She would have been in her sixties. Age isn’t the same to fae. We don’t age like humans. We don’t go grey for example until we’re well over three or four hundred years old.”
“Wait, wait, wait!” she held her hand up in disbelief. “Jack, the king, my father, his hair is white! His beard is white.”
“That actually happened in the last twenty–five years. He’s been blonde for sure, but it turned once you were lost.”

“Half a millennia I’m sure,” Rafferty shrugged. “Middle aged by fae accounts.”
“Holy fuck I really am just a baby. Are you creeped out by
being mated to the equivalent of a child.”
“Ew. No. Don’t ever say that again.” Wilder tapped her
nose. “We reach maturity the same way as humans. We are
born. We are infants. We become children and teenagers and then we mature. Just like humans, we grow into actual adults differently. Some people continue to act like kids for decades. Like the forty–something guy who drives a sports car like he stole it or the divorcee who starts acting like a cougar and screwing every young man she can find. There are some who are old souls and by the time they reach their early twenties they seem to have lived a lifetime. Our sister River is like that. She was born with big grey eyes and a judgmental expression. She was regal and serious. She is probably the most powerful fae I’ve ever met. Stronger than my mother at her age. Someday she will be queen, and she carries herself with grace and dignity.”
“She sounds formidable.”

“She is.” Rafferty nodded at Wilder’s words. “Funny story, your
big brother is terrified of her.”
“Really? Why?”
“About four or five years after you were taken, Jack showed
up at our palace drunk. He was raging and demanding that
we return the princess to the family. He was convinced we
had you hidden in the palace. River is the one who dealt
with him. I mean, we wanted to,” Wilder waved his thumb
between himself and his brother, “but my parents said let the
two future rulers duke it out and she handed his ass to him.
She actually beat him to a pulp, kneeled on his chest and told him her family had no need to steal a frozen princess in secret when she could simply take the throne right out from his grown ass in public. Told him if ever came for her family again, she’d take his life and his crown, and the Frosts would
die out with him. Scared the hell out of me.”
“She didn’t even break a sweat. While he’s continued his
search for you, avoiding a lot of his duties and training, she’s double downed. She’s been terrified for years that we were going to war with the north and to that end she amassed an
army.” Rafferty agreed.
“We fear her more than our parents and my father is a tough 3/6

son of a bitch.”
“Your mom?”
“A marshmallow. She was raised to be queen, and she is benevolent and kind and sweet. She can be tough when she
needs to be and she knows to stand her ground, but she has an uncanny ability to soften the edges of the hardest person. My father before they met was known to be a wild bastard. He was part of the southern army, a commander
before he was even in his early twenties. He was assigned to
my mother’s detail, and he helped her out of a car and zing,” Rafferty waved his fingers dramatically. “He dropped to one knee right in front of her and begged her not to reject him for being so far beneath her.”
“That’s very romantic.”
“He also pushed her back into the vehicle she was getting out of and fucked her right then and there. He mated, marked and claimed her within an hour of meeting her. My mother never saw his overbearing protective ass coming.”
Both men were smiling and Jacqueline stared at them.
“It’s normal then isn’t it?”

“Why don’t I feel what all the other fae are feeling?”
“Our priestess has a couple of theories. Her first theory is you’ve spent too much time away from your brethren that your senses and intuitions are dulled. We’re leaning more in this direction as well. It just makes sense.”
“What are her other theories?” The brothers exchanged looks
and she gave them looks, “come on. Tell me.”
“Well, there was a theory at the time you were taken about a
witch being involved.”
“A witch? Wait are there really witches?”
“Yes. Except, witches magic in a fae realm always leaves a trail. Always. No exception. So, the priestess at the very least, let alone my mother or sister, should be able to see the spell
you. The priestess cannot see anything.”

“Why can’t this priestess who can see all these things simply see who took me?”
“It’s not that easy. If a spell was cast by a witch, they have
ways to hide their work from fae, depending on how powerful the spell is and the witch is.”
“Why would a witch, a powerful witch, take me though and dump me in a New York City hospital?”
“They wouldn’t we don’t think.” Rafferty exhaled as he looked at Wilder. “Which brings us to the third theory.”
“And that is?”
“That the entire Frost family was behind it. You were dumped
as a way to start a war with our realm.”
