Power Part I
Sliding into the booth Jacqueline realized the booth with it’s high back and u–shaped benches was quite private and incredibly cozy. She looked on curiously as the two men slid
in on either side of her.

“Your sister seems really nice,” Jacqueline commented as
Wilder poured wine into a glass that Rafferty was holding.
“She is very nice. She’s the best big sister we could have
asked for.” Wilder gave her a smile.
“She was a second mother to us growing up. Very mother
hen,” Rafferty admitted, “and we needed it. She was never
one to cover up our crimes but rather hold us accountable.
However, she always made sure we knew we were loved.”
“You seemed deep in conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt.” Her curiosity was evident in her tone, and she accepted the
glass of wine from Wilder.

“We were talking about how we need to figure out a way to find out how Jacinta did what she did. We know your parents are going to listen without proof. We need to get the proof but it’s hard to do. It happened over twenty–five years ago. She’s played the role of distraught older sister for all those days.” Wilder said simply.
“River suggested perhaps Jacinta did what she did because she wanted us for herself and her gift of sight showed her we were bound to you.”
“What?” the comment struck her as odd. “Jacinta has the gift of sight?” Her eyes found Rafferty’s, “like yours?”
“No. I can see specific moments in time, currently happening. It helps me find my brother when he’s in danger,” Rafferty snickered. “Jacinta had the gift of foresight. She could
see something that was potentially going to happen. The
problem with her kind of gift is that the future is never exact and it’s always subject to interpretation. What she saw might not be what she saw, if you understand.”
“I don’t understand,” Jacqueline frowned.
“Okay,” he waved to a table across the way. “See that table with two couples?”

“Yes.”
“If she saw a vision of that woman sitting opposite that man, she might have interpreted it as a couple on a date but look at it for what it really is.”
“Her partner, boyfriend or whatever he is,” she nodded slowly as understanding dawned, “is the guy sitting beside her with his arm over her shoulder and not the guy across from her. She sees a snippet of something in the future, and she can interpret it wrong if she’s not seeing enough of the picture.”
“Exactly.” Wilder said with a nod. “Or alternatively, she could see something happening, but a million different things could happen between now and then and it never happened, especially if she interferes. As another example, if she sees in the future her mother eating a pizza for dinner and she says she’d rather have pasta and her mother eats pasta instead. She could in a way manipulate future outcomes.”
“Like seeing that I was going to be your mate so she made me disappear so it couldn’t happen.”
“River seems to think it’s a possibility for motive.”

“Why? You said before you never hooked up with her.”
“And we didn’t and we wouldn’t,” Wilder protested heartily. “She does nothing for me at all. I’ve been around her most
of her life and I never once considered her as anything other
than a sister–figure. She’s not attractive to me.”
“Me either,” Rafferty shrugged carelessly. “I find her as attractive as I would Jack. They were fun to get into trouble with or party with but I sure as hell never looked at her that
way.”
“But maybe she was looking at you that way,” Jacqueline whispered softly.
“In light of the way she grabbed our elbows when we first got back to the lodge after the flight, it’s a possibility. Then the way she was glowering at you from the balcony. She didn’t think we saw her right away, but we did.”
“She is jealous.” Jacqueline commented as she swirled her wine in her glass sadly.
“She sees you as the baby sister who was going to steal her parents, her brother and then when she saw you at birth and recognized you were going to take her friends or possible 4/6

lovers away from her too, she snapped and sent you away.” Wilder took a deep breath, “or at least this is River’s theory. We have to admit it makes sense.”
“But if she has the gift of sight, then she should have seen I’d come back or –
__”
“She lost her gift.”
“What? How does that happen?”
“The priestess suggested all those years ago it was trauma related but Mom tonight said maybe it was a punishment. She used her gift for evil and so it was taken from her by the
original queen.”
Jacqueline was stunned, “that can happen?”
“It’s not something which happens often, let me tell you,” Wilder said seriously. “Our kind value our gifts and we don’t usually abuse them because they are so important.”
“What gifts do you have?” Jacqueline asked Wilder seriously. “Rafferty can see people in a specific moment in time, but what can you do?”

Wilder grinned, “well we have family gifts, things that all Vaughn family members can do.”
“Like?”

“We can make flowers, trees and basically anything with
roots grow. I once trapped a thief in the palace with vines
which came from the earth. That is something all our Vaughn family can do. We can bring water to the surface from deep in the ground to nurture the earth and encourage growth. The Frost bloodline has similar familial abilities, like drawing wintery weather and creating icebergs out of nothing. We,” he waved to Rafferty, “also were born with the ability to speak the ancient language which made us very adept at learning the spells of the priestess. In reality, the priestess has said more than once our abilities were wasted on men because only females can work in the temple. When we make offerings, however, it seems they are always favored. I’ve not had an offering I’ve made not receive a response.”
“Seriously? You just pray and get what you want?”
