Ninety minutes later, Jacqueline was laughing harder than she’d ever laughed in her life. She was laying on her back in the snow with her skis in odd directions. River was howling
with laughter, kneeling next to her.
“I take it back. You will not be skiing better than your client in
four weeks. You’re terrible at this! You can control the snow,
the ice, and the weather,” River was giggling, “but your feet
are something else entirely!”
She laughed, “I’m really good at making snow angels
though!”
“Falling is definitely your forte,” River grinned. “Did you want to give up?”
“No!” She shook her head in the snow, “I want to keep trying.
I might not ever progress beyond the easier hills, someday
over the next four weeks, but I’m really enjoying myself. It’s fun and it’s exhilarating and I’m loving this experience” She06

grinned at River, “thank you for this.”
“It is my absolute pleasure, sister.” River helped her into a sitting position. “This is far better than sitting in boring meetings with my mother while she problem solves and I
take notes.”
“Everything okay here?” a voice called out and the two girls turned their heads to look at the ski patrol.
“We’re good. She’s just learning how to fall.”
“Falling the right way is important,” the young man drew closer his eyes lighting up at the two gorgeous young women in his sight. “Are you interested in some lessons?”
“I’m actually a really good skier,” River smiled. “I’m here with family but I’ve been to the Alps multiple times. She’s in good
hands.”
“If you change your mind,” he was staring at them hard.
“We won’t.” River brushed him off as she helped Jacqueline back up on her feet.
“What about drinks later?”

River frowned, “are you really hitting on me when I’m right here with my girlfriend? That’s kind of rude, isn’t it? Or are you hitting on her while she’s here with her girlfriend?”
“Uh,” he blinked nervously. “Sorry. No. I just –”
“We’re fine. You can go.” River waved him away.
The two women looked at each other and burst into laughter
as he skied away.
“That was amazing, Jacqueline giggled as River grinned at her. Her smile fell away and she stared into River’s eyes, “I’ve
never had this.”
“What?”
“A friend. A real friend. I’ve had people I work with. I’ve had people I went to school with and ate lunch with. I had girls. I shared rooms with while in foster or group homes, but I’ve never had a real friend I would say is a friend. This,” she waved her hands around as emotions clogged her throat,
“means more to me than I can ever explain to you River. Having mates is one thing but having someone I feel in my bones I can trust and who makes me feel comfortable and

laugh, is very special. Thank you, River.”
River grinned back and wiped a tear off her own cheek, “you’re making my eyes leak. Stop that.” River reached out and pulled her into a tight hug and whispered in her ear, “I’m so glad Wilder found you, Jacqueline. You were meant to be part of our family. I can feel it in my heart.”
Jacqueline hugged her back. “Thank you.”
“Hey, you two girls mind an intruder?”
Jacqueline and River pulled apart to see Fawn approaching
on her skis.
“Mom!” River grinned. “I thought you had meetings this
morning.”
“I did but then I thought, my daughter and my
daughter–in–law are having fun in the snow, and I want to be part of it. Do you mind if I join?”
“I would love that.”
Fawn smiled widely, “thank you!”

“I’ll warn you now, I’m bad at this.” Jacqueline giggled. “I’ve spent more time on my backside than anything.”
“When I was learning to ski, I was the same way. This body was born for diving off waterfalls in the jungle and running through forests barefoot. Strapping blades on my feet and gliding down icy hills was not natural for me.” Fawn snickered. “My father hated skiing. He didn’t mind skating but skiing, he would be at the lodge with beer in his hand telling stories around the fire and making people laugh.”
“He sounds lovely.” Jacqueline smiled at her.
“He was an incredible man. My mother stepped down when
he passed away. Most couples who are bonded don’t live
much longer than when their partner is gone. In fact, it’s
almost unheard of for them to live without one another. My
mother is a strong woman. She has always said she would
stay in this world until the mate bonds for the royals started
again. We haven’t seen a mate bond in our family or in the Frost family until you returned Jacqueline. It was like our creator knew someone was going to tamper with the bonds. and made it so that if you couldn’t have yours, then nobody could.” Fawn smiled, “or at least it’s my theory now.”
“Well, I hope my mate bond with the twins precipitates 5/7

everyone else finding their mates.” She grinned at River, “you’re next.”
“Imagine,” River laughed. “All the eligible people in my realm
and the Frost realm have been searched. Whoever it is,
either left the realm or wasn’t born yet.”
“Oh, that would be awesome.” Jacqueline met her gaze, “can you imagine if you got a mate as young as me? You could train him to be exactly what you wanted, like a new puppy.”
“That would be so much work,” River groaned. “I think I’d
rather an old man.”
The words made Jacqueline throw her head back and laugh
which resulted in her sliding and then falling on her backside
again. As they all started giggling again, Jacqueline decided
this felt far better than how her day started.
