Jacqueline entered the lodge between River and Fawn; her arms hooked into their elbows and laughing with a joy filling her chest in way which was novel for her. She never wanted this feeling to go away. Across the room, her eyes drifted to where four men were seated around a low table, each with a drink in hand and they were relaxed and laughing.
She frowned at the sight.
“Who is that?” River asked.
“The client who is supposed to be in a treatment program for addiction and I’m very sure he shouldn’t have a beer.”
“He is hot.”
“He’s twenty,” Jacqueline looked at River curiously and the woman was definitely ogling the young man. “A human twenty. He’s here because he got caught screwing a

watched. In his defense, the girl’s older sister got her into the party with a fake identification, but he definitely didn’t ask her to prove her age.”
“That’s gross.” River made a face. “He was in a hot tub with three women and one underage?”
“Technically not underage but definitely a kid. He needs a boot in the ass. It was my idea to throw him in rehab for four weeks to get his head on straight and away from his family. His mother is staying here but I haven’t seen her since we landed.” She led the women to the men around the low table
by the fireplace.
Immediately Wilder and Rafferty were on their feet and walking towards her.
Wilder was all smiles, “wow, look at you. You’re glowing and rosy cheeked. You’re beautiful.” He leaned close and kissed her cheek softly. He looked at River and his mother, “thank you. I can tell you both took very good care of our girl.”
“She’s easy to be with.” Fawn patted his forearm. “She’s also funny as hell.”
“River told a ski patrol guy we were lovers,” Jacqueline moved 2/7

towards Rafferty who held his arms out and she stepped into his hug.
“Hands off, River. She’s ours,” Rafferty kissed her cheek and led her to the table.
“Hey Jacqueline.” Wraith stood up and held his hand out to
her and she shook it. She looked at the bottle in front of him
and he laughed, “alcohol free. Wilder came in while three guys got into a brawl. One of the guys is there for an anger management thing and the other two are just assholes and
they were pushing his buttons and he snapped and started
swinging at both of them. Did I mention it was during the yoga class? Yoga, Jacqueline.” He leaned his head sideways as he caught sight of River and he shot her what Jacqueline knew he thought was his most disarming smile, “hey
beautiful. I’m Wraith. I’m not really a sex addict but I could
be.”
Jacqueline and Wilder both smacked him in the back of the
head as River looked at his hand like it was contaminated.
“That’s my sister, River, asshole,” Rafferty growled at him.
“Your sister, River, is drop–dead gorgeous. Seriously,” he looked at the Vaughn family, “what kind of genetic 3/7

engineering is your family into to get an entire family this
hot?”
He moved closer to River and before she could stop him, he grabbed her hand and then froze.
River’s eyes widened incredulously and then gasped.
“What is happening?” Wraith asked with big eyes. “Why is my arm tingling and why am I seeing gold shit? Wilder, did you lace my non–alcoholic beer?”
“River?” Fawn was staring at her daughter who was pale.
“He’s a kid!” River whispered in horror. “A human kid. What
the fuck?”
“Did they just,” Jacqueline turned her head to Rafferty who was staring in stunned disbelief. She choked out, “are they
mates?”
“This is not happening.” River tried to pull her arm back, but Wraith wasn’t letting her go.
“I don’t know what is happening, but it feels magical and I very much want to get you out of this room, somewhere 4/7

“No.”
Wraith stepped closer to her, “yes.”
“You’re human.”

“Aren’t we all?” Wraith asked with a raised eyebrow, his
other hand moving to keep her from pulling away from their clasped hands.
“No.” She shook her head at him, “we are not all human.”
“Are you drunk too?”
“No.” River looked at her mother, “what the hell?”
Hugh stood up and put his hand on River’s shoulder, “why don’t we take this conversation somewhere a bit more private? Let’s go up to your mother’s and I’s suite and we can have a real discussion.”
“Dad, he’s here because he fucked a teenager with other women watching. He’s a child. He’s still in college. I’m a 5/7

hundred years older than him.” She yanked at her hand, but
Wraith wouldn’t let go.
“I’m not letting go.” Wraith said seriously. “I don’t know what
this is, but I know it’s important and it’s real and my chest
is aching and you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever
seen.” He dropped to his knees, his eyes watering. “The idea of you walking away from me is making me hurt in the worst way. Please, River, don’t let go. I will die if you let go.”
Jacqueline stared in disbelief and then looked at her mates who both seemed torn between wanting to comfort their sister and celebrating her finding her mate. The way Wraith was pleading, the raw emotion on his face and Jacqueline was suddenly incredibly jealous.
“Is that what I was supposed to feel?” She looked at Wilder. “He’s not even fae and he feels more than I did and I had two
mates?”
“It’s not a competition, sweetheart,” Wilder said seriously.
“Look at him,” she waved to where he was on his knees begging River to not leave him and he’d only met her seconds ago, “and it’s been mere minutes and he’s besotted.” She looked at Wilder and Rafferty, “does it hurt? You felt like
