Jacqueline looked at Jack and then grimaced. “Are you kidding me? You don’t know what to do?”
He threw his hands up, “no. I don’t know what to do.
Jacqueline, you’re the baby sister I have searched for
all of my life. Do you know how many nights I went into
Jacinta’s rooms and expressed my fears and my worried
and heartbreak? Damn it, Jacqueline, I’ve been heartbroken
for twenty–five years. My mate and I,” he looked away, “we put off having kids. She wasn’t ready but I love kids. I have
always wanted a huge family. I wasn’t getting my own, so I
was thrilled with a baby sister to fill the gap until my wife was ready. Suspecting Jacinta might be behind this when I went to her to spill my heart is making me question everything. I’m
at a loss.”
“Where is she?” Jacqueline frowned at him, “your mate. I don’t give a f –” she caught herself when Hugh cleared his throat and gave him a cheeky grin, “fig, where Jacinta is. Where is your mate? Why is she not here?”

“My mate. Her name is Aspen. She is my everything. Our bond is gold.” He smiled as he thought of her. “She grew up in a small town surrounded by woods and her family. We met at a mate gala. I saw her across a room and knew before
I even touched her, I knew she was mine. She cried when I
was her mate. All she ever wanted was a farmer or a quiet accountant as a mate. Instead, she got the crown prince of the Northern Realm, palace life and not the quiet forest life she was used to. She finds it overwhelming. I offered for her
to come be with us but she’s not keen on large crowds of
strangers. I teleported back to her last night, and I will do so
again tonight.”
“She didn’t want to meet Jacqueline?” Wilder asked curiously.
“Yes but,” he met Jacqueline’s gaze, “when she heard of
Jacqueline’s reaction to the family, she thought perhaps too many of us might overwhelm you and she did not want to
be in the middle of drama. She also said she didn’t want
to get attached or connected to someone who wouldn’t
reciprocate.”
“I like her better than all of you already,” Jacqueline snorted.
“I will tell her that when I go home tonight.”

“What was her opinion of this shit?” Rafferty questioned. “You
went home to her last night. What did she say?”
“She didn’t say anything. I vented. I raged. Then she suggested I sleep on my thoughts. When I left her this morning she was still sleeping.”
“Jack, you should be with your mate.”
“We have been together thirty–five years, Jacqueline. We will be together a thousand more. I know without a shadow of a doubt, I am where I am supposed to be and I am here with her support.”
“What does she do?”
“Everything she can to avoid royal duties,” he grinned suddenly. “Seriously. She texted me this morning to tell me she was hiding in her private gardens pretending she couldn’t hear her maids asking for her. We decided last month to start trying for a baby and her mother mentioned it in front of our main housekeeper who took it upon herself to make sure Aspen is being fed food, which is supposed to enhance fertility, is begging her to do ancient exercises and encouraging her to make trips to the temple. Aspen said to

me this morning all she needs is frequent doses of cock and she should be fine to get pregnant without all the hullabaloo.”

Jacqueline giggled, “I feel I really would like her better than all of you. Can you bring her here and you all leave?”
“That hurts my feelings, Jacqueline,” Jack frowned at her. “I am trying.”
“You are pushing.”
“Well, after last night and the way Jacinta behaved then and then again this morning, I am concerned.” He sighed loudly, “I am sure you have plans, you and your sister?” He waved at the twins. “You always plot shit out Wilder, don’t give me that look and River and Rafferty either clean up your messes or egg you on. I know you have something on.”
“We don’t actually,” Wilder leaned forward. “We figured out a few things. Like the hospital where Jacqueline was taken was near the park we used to go to when our grandparents did the diplomatic talks all those years ago.”
“That’s where you fell in love with New York,” Jack nodded. “I remember you saying when we were kids someday you 4/6

would grow up and live in New York with all the big buildings and rich people.” He looked at Jacqueline, “he’s always loved his money.”
“Same,” Jacqueline smiled at Wilder. “It’s my favorite thing.”
Jack shook his head, “so the hospital is near the park?”
“We would pass it when the nannies were bringing us to the park. We were kids. All she would have needed to do was
remember it momentarily and drop Jacqueline there.” Wilder
said.
“Then there is the fact that Jacqueline was dropped with a
note which said her name was Jacqueline Frost.”
“What?” he froze as if contemplating something he’d not yet
considered.
“There was a note which was pinned to the blanket which was around Jacqueline which gave her name as Jacqueline Frost. Not Jac. Not J. Jacqueline. Spelled out. I have the files from social services and there is a photo.”
Jack stared at the twins and Jacqueline noted the way they
were all tense at the comment. 5/6

“I don’t understand what that means. So, what if someone pinned my name to my blankie?”
“The thing is, Jacqueline,” Jack cleared his throat. “Only four people knew the name my mother had picked out for you. Everyone presumed it would be Jack in some form or another
because my mother has a sense of humor and felt that if the
boys were needing to be named Jack then so were the girls.
However, she told my father, me, and my sister. Nobody else
knew.”
