“No… nothing important.”
If he hadn’t even thought about the precinct, she certainly wasn’t going to remind him. “I just realized it’s been ages since we had dinner together. Are you free tomorrow?”
“I’m tied up with site inspections all day. No.”
“Oh, I see,” Grace murmured, letting her disappointment bleed into her voice. “Alright then. We’ll plan for another time. Get some rest.”
“Yeah.”
He hung up.
Grace stared at her darkened screen, a slow, triumphant smile curling her lips.
Silas was at home. He wasn’t coming.
Vivian, Vivian. What are you going to use to fight me now?
Deciding there was no reason to waste another second in this depressing station, Grace stood up and approached the desk sergeant. “I’m heading out for the night. Call me the moment there’s an update.”
The officer nodded politely. The parking lot was just around the corner.
Grace had barely reached her car when her phone buzzed with an incoming call from the station. “Miss Gifford? Someone just processed Miss Fairchild’s bail. They’re walking out right now. Are you still on the premises?”
Grace whipped her head toward the exit just as high beams sliced through the darkness.
Forgetting her car entirely, she sprinted toward the main gates.
A sleek black Mercedes was tearing out onto the main road. She recognized that license plate anywhere.
It was Silas’s car!
Ice flooded Grace’s veins. She stood frozen to the asphalt.
She had just spoken to him! He was supposed to be in bed. How was he here?
Biting her lip hard enough to draw blood, she fumbled for her phone, her trembling fingers betraying her absolute panic.
No… calling him wouldn’t fix this.
She spun on her heel, threw herself into her red Porsche, and gunned the engine. She tore
down the highway, chasing the Mercedes toward the Sterling estate like a demon

possessed, ignoring the speed limits on the empty summer streets
After running several red lights, she finally spotted the familiar taillights
She slammed her foot on the gas, cutting the Mercedes off in a screeching, violent stop Shaking uncontrollably, she flung her door open before the engine even died
Simon was seconds away from rolling down the window to scream at the lunatic driver when he caught sight of the furious woman storming toward them.
Oh, crap, he thought. He turned to the backseat with a strained, awkward smile. “Mrs. Sterling… it’s Grace.”
Vivian opened her eyes, a sharp, radiant glint flashing in the darkness.
She glanced out the window and chuckled softly. “She’s persistent, I’ll give her that.”
Persistent? She looked completely unhinged.
