The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 206

Chapter 206

“Silas.” The moment the call connected, Grace’s soft, pleading voice drifted through the speaker. “You haven’t reached out to me in so long. Are you still mad at me?”

Judging by her slurred words, she had definitely been drinking.

Vivian kicked off her shoes and lazily leaned against the headboard, placing the phone on the mattress right next to her.

“I know rejecting your proposal embarrassed you, but I have my own future to think about. You can’t expect me to just follow your rhythm on everything, right? I…”

“My career is finally taking off. You know I don’t want people saying I got by on my looks or a man’s money. I want to stand beside you as an equal. I don’t want my only identity to be ‘Mrs. Sterling’. Silas…”

Her tone was remarkably delicate and vulnerable, guaranteed to pull at anyone’s heartstrings.

Combined with that slight, drunken haze-

Any man listening would find it nearly impossible to remain indifferent.

When Grace was met with silence, she assumed Silas was still furious. Her voice cracked

with an impending sob. “I know I handled it poorly, but it’s been so long. Shouldn’t you have cooled off by now? You’ve been parading Vivian around just to make me jealous, and I haven’t even complained, have I?”

“Silas, can we just call it even?”

“Come see me.”

“Even when you sided with Vivian over my cousin, I didn’t say a word. Come to me, and we’ll talk everything out. Let’s not let irrelevant people and meaningless drama come between us

anymore.”

Tsk.

Vivian was suddenly incredibly curious to know just how much Silas used to spoil this

woman.

For Grace to speak with such entitled, confident arrogance.

“Silas, are you listening to me?”

“I am.”

The moment Vivian’s voice rang out, there was a stunned, drawn-out silence on the other end. Then, Grace’s trembling, furious voice exploded: “Vivian, why the hell are you answering Silas’s phone?!”

“If I didn’t answer, how would I get to hear you throw yourself at him?”

The woman on the line was practically losing her mind. Even through the speaker, Vivian could hear her frantic, uneven breathing.

It took several moments for Grace to collect herself. When she spoke again, the soft, drunken vulnerability was entirely gone.

“Do you have any idea what time it is? Vivian, do you have no sense of shame?”

“Shame?”

Vivian let out a sharp laugh.

“You seem to be a little confused, Miss Gifford. I am Silas’s girlfriend. You’re the one calling a man who’s in a relationship in the middle of the night. So tell me, who’s the shameless one here?”

“You-!”

Grace choked on her words, completely speechless.

She knew this woman possessed a venomous tongue. Arguing with her was a guaranteed losing battle.

But a sharp tongue was all she had.

Steadying her nerves, Grace forced herself to sound composed.

“You don’t need to try and provoke me. You know perfectly well that Silas and I have a history far more complicated than whatever you see on the surface. I don’t know why he agreed to date you, but do you honestly believe… he’d ever actually let me go?”

They grew up together, running in the same elite circles for years, backed by families of equal standing.
