The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 74

Chapter 74

“Shh… they’re right over there.”

The lighting a short distance away was dim, the area practically deserted. A man was holding a heavily intoxicated woman-or rather, he was bracing her with one arm just to keep her from collapsing onto the floor.

The woman had clearly drank past her limit. She was weeping softly, a picture of fragile, delicate vulnerability.

Vivian Fairchild stood perfectly still, completely calm. Even though she couldn’t clearly make out the scene in the shadows, she felt as if she were standing right beside them, even letting out a faint, internal sigh.

This man really was incredibly cold-hearted.

The woman was crying her eyes out, and he wasn’t even going to attempt to comfort her?

“Grace Gifford,” Scarlett Sinclair whispered.

Scarlett stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her, pressed flat against the wall, keeping her voice to a bare murmur. “Silas’s sweetheart.”

“Honestly, the girl’s got some serious nerve. Silas Sterling has bent over backward for her, doing things way out of character for a man of his status, and this chick hasn’t given him the time of day. She even completely humiliated him by rejecting his public proposal.”

Beautiful celebrities marrying into extreme wealth were a dime a dozen, but Grace was different.

She came from old money herself, the absolute apple of her parents’ eyes.

Ever since high school, Silas had spoiled her so rotten that she had lost all touch with reality. Her arrogant entitlement was almost understandable.

“So what exactly is going on now?” Vivian asked. Grace wouldn’t be crying like a broken woman over some other guy.

Scarlett couldn’t quite figure it out either. “Maybe she realized she messed up and regrets it?”

She felt like she had just hit the nail right on the head.

“There’s been a rumor going around in private circles for a while now. They say Silas’s grandfather arranged a marriage for him when he was a kid, and it looks like that promise is finally being called in.”

If that was the case, even if Grace had been keeping Silas around as a backup plan, she was about to lose her safety net.

Chapter 74

Scarlett rubbed her chin, muttering, “I wonder if it’s actually true.”

“It’s true,” Vivian said.

“… Huh?”

How would you know that?

Vivian didn’t elaborate, nor did she have any interest in watching the soap opera unfold. “You can stay and watch if you want,” she said dismissively. “I have actual business to take care of.”

“Hey… you’re leaving already?” Scarlett watched Vivian’s retreating back, about to jog after her, when a pair of polished men’s dress shoes suddenly entered her downcast line of sight.

Her gaze slowly trailed upward. Under the dim lights, the man’s face was flawlessly handsome.

Their eyes locked.

Even though she knew he couldn’t see her, Scarlett’s heart still inexplicably skipped a frantic beat.

Silas’s eyes were pitch-black and dangerously bottomless, like a void that could freeze a person in their tracks and send a shiver of pure ice down their spine.

To avoid being treated like some stalking paparazzi, Scarlett took the initiative and spoke up. “It’s me.”

Having grown up together, they were naturally hyper-familiar with the sound of each other’s

voices.

The harsh tension around Silas’s eyes visibly relaxed a fraction. “What are you doing here?” he asked, his voice a low rumble.

“If you can be here, why can’t I?” Scarlett scoffed, shooting a disdainful glare at the woman behind him.

She hadn’t gotten a good look a moment ago, but now the woman was clinging to his back as if someone had extracted her spine. Was she a leech? She was practically plastered to Silas’s body!

Grace was still sobbing, murmuring between choked gasps.

“Silas…

…you… you can’t marry her. Have you forgotten what we promised each other?”

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Absolutely shameless.
