“If there’s no fire for protection, pour alcohol around the bed in a circle. If something strange happens, light it. But only if someone’s watching. We don’t want to burn down the hospital.”
Darcy quickly typed and sent the message.
Lucas saw it, frowned, and tossed his phone aside.
“That good kid Darcy’s been completely led astray by that country girl! What nonsense! Does he want me to burn my daughter alive?”
Neil, overhearing, chimed in, “You’re right. That must’ve been Venus’s idea.
“She’s always been weird and malicious. We can’t let her anywhere near Sophia-she brings bad luck.”
Lucas nodded grimly. “Lumi told me before that Venus has sticky fingers. She even stole from her a few times. I really don’t know what sweet talk she used to fool Darcy.”
Neil knew Darcy only treated Venus well because she had saved Archer’s life, but he refused to admit it.
“She’s manipulative, Mr. Jynn. Always acted all meek and pitiful back home, but now that she’s got Mr. Weston behind her, she thinks she’s untouchable.”
Lucas sighed. “Next time I see Darcy, I’ll have a serious talk with him.
“He’s such a fine young man, so why on earth would he fall for a girl like her? I’ll talk to his grandfather too. We can’t let Venus ruin his life.”
Late that night, the hospital was silent except for the faint smell of disinfectant.
Sophia lay unconscious on the bed.
The monitor beeped softly, steady and rhythmic.
Lucas was dozing on the couch.
Neil sat by the bed, jotting notes on a clipboard.
The window was half open, letting in a chilly breeze that made the white curtains billow. For a moment, a shadow flickered past.

Neil looked up, frowned, and went to close the window.
Then, an icy gust swept through the hall, blowing the door wide open.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
The monitor’s rhythm spiked into a frantic alarm, echoing like a countdown.
“Sophia!” Lucas jolted awake, rushing over just as Neil began emergency treatment.
Her face was ghostly pale, lips turning blue, as if invisible hands were strangling her.
“What’s happening to my daughter?”
Neil kept working. “Her infection might have worsened. She’s struggling to breathe!”
Bang!
The window slammed open again.
The wind howled, tossing the curtains wildly.
Drip! Drip! Drip!
From the corridor came the sound of heavy water droplets hitting the floor.

Lucas’s expression changed. He stumbled toward the door to shut it, only for the wind to swing it back and knock him out cold.
“Mr. Jynn!”
Neil bent down to help him.
But before he could react, someone stepped over his head.
“Who’s there?” he barked, looking up.
Venus was already inside, a bottle of alcohol in hand. She poured it in a circle around the bed and flicked her lighter.
Boom!
Flames roared to life, encircling Sophia’s bed in an instant.
“Are you insane? You can’t light a fire in a hospital!” Neil shouted, horrified.
Venus did not even glance at him. Her eyes were fixed on the floor-on the trail of wet
